Do you remember the quote of Anthony Bourdain re: bidets
“I like a fluffy hotel towel. I like a bidet. Look, I like warm jets of water squirting up my ass. I mean, who doesn’t?”
I thought he said something like who wouldn’t love warm water squirting up your ass …
Americans who haven’t traveled to Japan don’t know what they’re missing …
Or Italy, where it’s basically mandatory.
Charmin, be warned.

Not food related, but I got a mattress from Costco, on sale, with delivery and haul-away included. It was about $200 less than the equivalent at one of the mattress chains.
But when they delivered this morning, they wouldn’t take away the old one, because it was “dirty”. It was not dirty, just lumpy and sagging, no worse condition than any old mattress. They did put it in the back yard, but it’s very heavy.
When I got a new stove from them a few years ago, they wouldn’t haul away the old O’keefe & Merritt because it was too heavy. I had to pay someone else to remove it.
Nay, Costco, nay.
Sorry to hear that. Might be worth calling for an adjustment or rebate on services. I ordered a dishwasher from Costco that required a certified tech to install…but none were available for a month +, which they failed to tell me…yet there was the dishwasher. I called Costco customer service to ask if they can take it back and bring it back when the tech comes, because otherwise it would sit in my living room until then. They said no but here’s a $50 buck adjustment. Not perfect but it made it tolerable. Might try calling because of the hassle and it’s probably the delivery pick up guys being lazy.
The is a law in California (AB 187) which requires all. companies to take back any mattress. You should call Costco
I posted about this on another forum, and a friend found an escape clause:
State of California, Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act
Article 7. Retailer Used Mattress Take-back 42992
(d) A retailer or third-party contractor delivering a new mattress may refuse to pick up a used mattress from a consumer if the retailer or contractor determines the used mattress is contaminated and poses a risk to personnel, new products, or equipment.
The only “contamination” was my own cooties. I will be complaining.
Just do what people do in my area: drive out to an orchard or vineyard late at night and dump it.
[No! I’m kidding! Do not do this. While it’s exceedingly common around here, sometimes it seems that old mattresses and other domestic detritus are the crop. Besides, you’d have to drive a long way from Berkeley to find the nearest orchard or vineyard.]
I can ask the city for a large-waste pickup. An old sofa and some random trash is also sitting in the garage waiting for disposal.
I don’t know about orchards, but there are excellent vineyards in outer Contra Costa County, about 30 miles away.
Almost 50 years ago, I was hitchhiking through the Bay Area, and the land between San Jose and Oakland was covered with stone fruit orchards. It’s sort of a reversal of Talking Heads (Nothing but) Flowers.
Yep, my grandparents used to live in Palo Alto and we’d drive from the Central Valley at least twice a month to visit them. Our route involved going around the southern end of the bay on Route 237, and I remember all the flower fields and farm stands. That was even before Great America! We used to pick up strawberries at a stand probably about where Target is now.
That’s a very messed up Costco; I’d go in in person and speak to TOP manager … I’ve always received excellent customer service.
I frequent mostly SSF Costco, sometimes downtown SF Costco or the Airport one.
we buy an inexpensive mattress bag before asking for haul away.
Costco called because of my negative review (a down vote on the email rating form they sent), and they’ll be picking the old mattress up tomorrow.
Good outcome!
I love them. They taste almost as good as the one we get local chinese restaurant…although the restaurant makes them larger, and jucier. I steam them with bamboo basket, and like them a little firmer - about a min or two less than recommended time.
I hear Costco is now carrying (at a great price) Fishwife tuna in olive oil, spicy.
Has anyone tried it? I always get their Wild Planet one.
