2026 costco yay/nay/meh

I’m guessing 20z? Easily one serving for me. I’d probably need a chaser after.

it was a tad over three pounds . . .
I cut different sizes - some are individual servings, a couple are two servings size.

you’ve cut the salmon beautifully!

I typically purchase a pound of salmon for my wife and me whcih seems…generous. I wonder what your porton size goal is? I guess from there, the fish goes into the freezer?

best,

my aim is ~ four ounces/ 115 grams per portion.
we’re empty nest, old geezers - that plus veggies . . . makes for us a meal.

freezer? absolutely. Costco is the only place that (usually) has steel head trout.
looks like salmon, pretty close to salmon, but genetically identical to rainbow (brook) trout.

I asked our local (most excellent) fishmonger why they don’t routinely carry (fresh) sockeye salmon, or steel head . . .
answer: the local population is just too dxmn cheap to buy ‘the good stuff’

thanks, yes, not sure why i wrote salmon (other than I’m an old geezer too). I’ve had whole food’s steel head trout, didn’t realize it was so similar to brook trout.

Just a side note: here in the PNW we have access to farmed steelhead from the Columbia River on a regular basis at our local grocer. It makes a darned-fine cold-smoked “salmon”.

We also like the steelhead from Costco… We have a fishmonger at our local market who once described steelhead to us as “what salmon used to be” and while I never had salmon growing up as a kid, I understand the description based on what some sad pieces of salmon are like these days. I substitute it in recipes often for salmon.

Another fan of the steelhead trout - at Costco and elsewhere. Although for a raw preparation like a poke bowl or a crudite, I like the extra fattiness of a the salmon. Just need to get he good farmed salmon.

@vinouspleasure - I prefer the Synear too. I’ve enjoyed the Mila before it hit Costco and it’s overall a good soup dumpling, but the filling of the Synear was the clear winner for me. Especially true if you enjoy the crab+pork dumplings. The Mila, and many frozen brands, tastes almost identical to just pork, but the Synear version has a slightly more noticeable crab flavor.

two Costcos ago, , , no steelhead to be had - so I got a side of salmon.

still had a piece of salmon left, so we did a side-by-byte-side taste test to the steelhead.
the differences are very very slight - and iffin’ it’s dressed up with sauce/etc, probably could not tell one from the other…

Love steelhead trout–my fishmonger carries it regularly. Definitely not the same as rainbow trout.

I’m digging these pickles - in the refrigerated section sort of near the bacon.

Those are really good. They have a spicy version that I like even more, but as far as I know it’s not sold at Costco.

Just seen at my local Costco: Fishwife’s 3-pack of albacore tuna in spicy olive oil. $32 on the Fishwife website, $14.49 at Costco.

Huge YEA: Love Beets cooked beets. Contains four bags of four perfectly cooked, but totally unseasoned beets. Enough in each bag for a very generous single serving or probably just enough for two individual servings boosted with some arugula or something. I enjoyed a bag earlier in a not especially creative way, with goat cheese, pistachios, olive oil, balsamic, and a big sprinkle of salt. Absolutely delicious and highly recommended if you like beets.

Sounds plenty creative to me …

That’s like the standard beet dish on every restaurant menu in this area for the past several years. Wonderful combination, but I can’t take any credit!

If you’d just cut up the beets and sprinkled on salt, that’d have been very ordinary. You took the time and effort to enhance.

Late review - was having weird photo issues. I tried the Buddha Jumps Over the Wall from Costco over the LNY - I got these for 29.99, with a two-pack, each pack showing 2 servings (they would serve two children, probably not adults).

Buddha Jumps Over the Wall is seen as a premium, luxurious (and labor intensive) dish filled with delicacies.

The dish is very brothy. The flavorful broth is a feature of the dish, but as you can see from the pictures below, the broth to delicacies ratio is a little off. This picture also features fried tofu triangles that I added myself to make the meal more substantial.

There are indeed 3 smallish abalones in each pack, and a few small pieces of fish maw. The broth is actually rich and fairly tasty, though I wouldn’t say it’s amazing. For little effort except heating this in a pot, think the package was tasty enough. Is it worth the mini-splurge? I would say meh. It’s not a nay, but it’s not enough for a full endorsement either. Adding the tofu and anything to soak up the tasty broth is a good plan. If I had this again, in addition to the tofu, I would also add in a few shiitake mushrooms.

No pictures, but also tried the Bibigo Sweet & Spicy Tteokbokki. Pack of 3. The sauce leans way more heavily sweet than spicy, but there is a decent spice that will kick in the more you eat. Kind of boring to be honest and it really needed something to go with it or the sauce needs more dimension. I threw in fresh chopped garlic, cilantro and scallions which helped. Another meh. Why on god’s green is earth each pack a whopping 890 calories though!

Are we allowed to talk about Costco items that aren’t food?

A friend (birthday gift) knew I wanted the Toto bidet $400. This month it’s on sale for $325.

Just got installed, I consider myself a genius for looking at the manual and lowering heat on seat and water temperature.

So far, I’m thrilled, loved these when I visited Japan a few years ago.

Once you go bidet, you can never go back. Esp. when it’s a Toto.

Living large. Or at least sitting large.
