Black Forest Kitchen to serve Turkish doner kebab starting on April 4 in Uptown Oakland at 478. 25th St
From Oaklandside Nosh
Döner is of Turkish origin and loved fiercely throughout Berlin for its thin, juicy slabs of spit-roasted meat topped with herby yogurt sauce and fresh veg. True to form, Black Forest Kitchen’s rendition consists of chicken, red onions, cucumbers, feta cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, red cabbage, garlic, jalapeños and a spicy sauce (plus a plant-based version with oyster mushrooms instead of chicken). Black Forest Kitchen, 478 25th St., Oakland*
At least their picture doesn’t look like a proper doner - that’s never drowned in cream based sauces and the bread looks odd. But a good doner place would really fill a need
I almost sent a link to son and DIL (they live in Turkey on and off, but currently in Sacto), but I wasn’t sure it was a good move
Perhaps a decent doner is better than no doner at all
Yes. Maybe they have decent doners nearer Sacramento.
I have yet to find a doner in the US anywhere
Do you mean a “decent”, or an “authentic” one or something? Sacramento advertises a few places. While I know DIL makes her own, I seem to recall my kids finding at least one that was satisfactory. I can’t claim personal experience but I am happy to ask if you are interested.
Bummer - I went for the first time in December. We had our office holiday party at Bimbos and the after party there.
I meant decent - now I am curious where do they get good doner kebab in Sacramento similar to the style in Germany (and other parts in Europe) ?
I don’t know about any of those qualifiers, but I can ask! I believe I remember them being pleased to find doner kebab at a Mediterranean restaurant in Fairfield. I know they are into “bread”.
I noticed an awesome looking “meze” at a place you reviewed in the South Bay that looked impressive, but that’s a long way from Sacramento.
Meyhouse might be the best Turkish restaurant we have experienced do far in the US - it’s very good (but sadly doesn’t serve doner kebab). We are in general surprised that nobody in the US started anything serious with doner kebabs it is for example in Germany the best selling fast food even more than McD etc. There was a shop in LA but the product was really disappointing (and we had a very low bar to just get something which faintly resembles a doner)
Well these two have a McD’s budget, so Meyhouse is not in the cards anyway!
ETA; I asked son where to get good doner kebab and he answered " Türkiye!!"

Inside Jagalchi you’ll finda 160-seat restaurant, a bakery two bars, a butcher and a fish monger and a whole lot of people.
It takes the place of the old JCPenney store which closed in 2019. That same space also housed Mervyns at one point until it closed in 2008.
It takes up 75,000 square feet in Serramonte Mall.
