2022 Grocery Outlet [California, Oregon, Washington, etc., etc.]

Nice, welcome to the cult.

Good time to drop a collection of photos I’ve been taking (most at San Raf GO):

Didn’t try this but looked interesting. Nice price: $1.99

I was kind of excited about these meat-free sausage rolls, but they’re not that good – much too bready. Rather novel tho and the price was good.

We have a set of waxed wraps like these (from TJs, maybe?) and I really like them for wrapping cheese. Not sure if this is a good price.

Pretty decent price on stasher bags.

This is hands down the best veggie meat I’ve had lately (the original flavor). Price is a touch more than I’d like to pay ($4.99 – would love to see it at the $3 mark and then I’d buy out the stock), but so good.

The pipcorn stuff is pretty decent, esp. at $1.99

I think I posted these Talia Neapolitan pizzas before. At $3.99 this is a no-brainer buy (note: no cheese on this variation, but you can add it yourself).

These “fresh” (refrigerated) olives aren’t bad for the price.

I like to stop at Grocery Outlets I haven’t been to before, and the conversation about “good” and “bad” GOs (where “bad” ones have fewer high-end products/finds) made me think about how I’d categorize the various GOs I’d been too. Curious to hear from others, esp. those in the Bay Area. Here’s a handful of rankings.

San Rafael

“Atmosphere”: B. It’s a newer store. Aisles are pretty wide, carts are still in pretty decent shape. Lately price tags haven’t been regularly placed and there are more frequent stocking gaps (empty sections) than I’ve noticed in the past.
Frozen section: B. good. Frequent selection of veggie meats, good ice cream mix.
Dairy/Milk: C. Seems like the standard offerings in my area.
Pricing: D. OK, higher/highest prices on the same items than GOs I’ve been to in outlying areas (where presumedly the rent is cheaper. One example: Jennifer’s breadsticks: $1.99 in Sac, $3.99 or 2.99 here. $2.49 at other GOs). Rarely see prices get dropped on products, they just sit forever.
Cheese: C. Fair. Small-ish section of “nice” cheeses, but usually gets the good stuff. Regular deals on more common cheeses.
Produce: C. Workable. Often buy strawberries and melons here.
Wine/Beer: D. One of the worst selections w.r.t. better wines that I’ve seen. Usually doesn’t stock the wines I’ve bought at other GOs. “Standard” beer selection (nothing special outside the common brands).
NOSH: C. Used to be better but right now they have a TON of beet powders and stuff. A lot of things don’t seem to be moving well.
Candy/Chocolate Bars: C. Winners come through every once in awhile but not consistent.
Baking: B. I regularly find good baking essentials here (chocolate chips, flour, sugar etc).
“Mexican/Asian”: C. The standard stuff.
Checkout: D. Regular long lines. A little understaffed w.r.t cashiers.

Obviously all of these things vary on a regular basis depending on stock, but generally if other GOs were closer to me I’d probably pick them ahead of this one for the types of things I like to buy at grocery outlet. That said, this is a really nice store to browse at and that counts for a lot.

Novato: this is the next most convenient store to me.

“Atmosphere”: C-. It’s been around awhile and there is a dearth of carts, many are rusted/beat up. Aisles are pretty tight, I feel like they recently re-laid it out and that improved it a lot but still not as nice as other GOs.
Frozen section: C. Seems pretty standard, I can’t remember any high notes here.
Dairy/Milk: C. Standard, maybe smaller than other GOs.
Pricing: C. Pricing seems to be slightly better here than San Rafael.
Cheese: C. Fair. They have a “cheese island” where they separate out the fancier cheeses, but stock-wise it seems similar to other Gos.
Produce: C. Mostly standard.
Wine/Beer: A. Often have the wines I’m looking for. Pretty large selection. Include manager callouts of vivino ratings and the like. Stock small brewer six packs that often can’t be found at other GOs.
NOSH: C. Haven’t found anything special here.
Candy/Chocolate Bars: B. Slightly above other GOs I’ve been at. There’s a TON of Tony’s Chocoloney there for $99 right now (weird flavors tho).
Baking: I can’t actually recall what their baking section is like.
“Mexican/Asian”: C. The standard stuff.
Checkout: C. I think generally I’ve had decent experiences getting out quickly here.

I always have a bottle of Spice Island Beau Monde in my cabinet. It is an ingredient in a family favorite smoked salmon dip recipe and I use it in Bloody Marys in place of celery salt. Good stuff.

These are my grades for the East Hayward GO. Bear in mind that the target demographics matches the neighborhood, which ranges from poor to basic middle class (teachers, nurses, government workers, etc.), so a lot of the fanciest stuff doesn’t come here.

“Atmosphere”: C. Your basic supermarket setting. Smaller than some other GOs. The lighting is a bit harsh too.
Frozen section: B. I don’t look at most of this section beyond ice cream and single frozen meals. The selection for those can be expansive or meager, depending on the day. Sometimes, it seems that nearly all of the ice cream is either plant-based or those generic half-gallons of sherbet.
Dairy/Milk: B-. They usually have milk on the rare times I get milk. Yogurt and such also can be expansive or nothing but plant-based items.
Pricing: B. Good finds, but nothing super-cheap.
Cheese: B-. No cheese island, but sometimes there are interesting gems. Much better at interesting domestic cheeses than international ones.
Produce: N/A. I don’t buy produce here.
Wine/Beer/Spirits: B+. I don’t really shop this section, but they have a lot of wine, and they’ve started upping their game on the beer/spirits selection (e.g., Drake’s beer, name-brand spirits like Maker’s Mark).
Groceries: A-. This is their strength. Tons of organic products, good-priced canned fish (as long as you check the expiration dates), lots of options for coffee and tea, etc. They now usually have Dave’s Killer Bread and other healthier breads (not just Wonder and the like). I can easily get organic ground beef, and sometimes organic ground lamb–both are around $7/lb.

@BeefeaterRocks That’s good to know. I was charmed by the name and after seeing your reply, went back to GO today to pick up a bottle. Who wouldn’t want a Beau Monde? I’m a fan of Bloody Mary’s and salmon dip both. Don’t suppose you could point me towards a recipe for the latter? Thanks.

Had a day off from work today, so what did I do? Stopped by a different GO, this one farther south on Santa Teresa in San Jose. Someone send me the badge for cult membership.

I’m not sure I have enough experience with GO in general to give ratings, but I’ll summarize my impressions of these two stores.

Foxworthy, San Jose
Atmosphere: B The floors are pretty beat up, but the aisles are decently wide and well lit. This is a mixed area of San Jose, used to be working and middle class but now rapidly gentrifying because of proximity to Los Gatos and buses to megacorps.
There are smaller amounts of a lot of different items here. The cheese section has a sad tiny little island compared with the photos of SF and other cities. Small wine selection.

Here are some recent finds:
8oz Galbani fresh mozzarella bocconcini $3
Mikawaya Mochi Ice cream mango flavor 6pieces $3.99
XO baking company gluten free mixes, several types such as double chocolate cookie and blondies $3.99
Bibigo frozen Korean potstickers pork and veggies minis 24oz. $6.99
Tony’s chocolonely bars. Milk hazelnut cookie for $2.99 and the rather dubious flavor white chocolate cookie sprinkles raspberries for 99 cents
Don’t know if any of you are fans— if you prefer Toblerone to Lindt dark 80% you might be— these are hefty 180g bars and that is a great price.
Grey Poupon the classic jar $1.99

This location has some Rockwall bottles but the Santa Teresa one has far more.

Santa Teresa GO

Atmosphere:A
This feels like a new store in good repair with lots of space. It’s more like a regular grocery store and less quirky than the Foxworthy location. Both the meat and wine selections were strong. Couldn’t really gauge the cheese selection because there was an issue with the refrigerated section but no cheese island.

I spotted some Marin County steaks and Rock Wall vintages here, both Zinfandel and Pinot for $12.99.

The personal care section was well stocked. I found a bottle of conditioner that is no longer being made for $2.99 and several offerings from EO and other brands you might see at Whole Foods.

Other items:
Muir Glen organic tomatoes 28oz. Diced and crushed 99 cents
Chosen foods avocado oil 25.4 fl oz $10.99
King Arthur gluten free sugar cookie mix $2.99 we have good friends who are GF and KA mixes have been popular with them

There was a lot of overlap between the two GO stores but I felt that this location had fewer of the spices and dry goods. Definitely better for meat and wine. I also spotted my GO goofy product of the day here: disco chocolate chips. Chocolate chips with glitter on them— don’t worry, they’re edible. Did not buy.

Well my bad, I blame senior memory. The smoked salmon dip was not the one that had the Beau Monde it was the following.
1 cup mayo
1 cup sour cream
1 T dried minced onion
1 t dill weed
1 t beau monde seasoning
I had to get the recipe from my sister, she said she had just finished a batch.

My other sister gave me the recipe for the smoked salmon. It’s really more of a spread than a dip.
1 8oz Philadelphia cheese…soften
1/2 C sour cream
1 T mayo
1C. Smoked salmon broken in small pieces
Mix first 3 ingredients until smooth.
Add lemon juice, diced red onion, garlic salt, and dill to taste. Stir in smoked salmon.
Refrigerate until ready to use.
She said she has been adding Old Bay lately and really liked it.

@BeefeaterRocks Thanks for both recipes. The onion dip sounds promising. Salmon dip would be yummy, even without the beautiful world.

A couple more GO rankings.

Petaluma Downtown:

Haven’t been here enough visits to give a full rating, but some details to share:
Atmosphere: C. A little run down. It’s an older store. Layout inside is a bit weird, kind of cramped.
Wine/Beer: A. This store is known for its wine buyer. There are full reviews posted on many of the wines. I have found great beers here that I haven’t seen elsewhere. A good one to check for wines.
Checkout: C. longer waits.

Richmond GO (San Pablo Ave): have been here a couple times recently.
Atmosphere: Solid B. Narrow aisles, but store feels nice and clean. The store itself feels “bigger” than other GOs, or maybe just has more product on the shelves.
Wine/Beer: A. This is why I’ve returned a couple times. Good selection. e.g. full run of Rockwall wines, still has La Closerie, etc. Small “manager’s choice” signs on wines that seem to be trustworthy (I’ve found them on many wines I’ve enjoyed, and used them to find some more I liked). . Beer selection is similarly pretty decent. They stock one of favorite beer: Fort Point’s Sfizio (at what is basically a fairly common bevmo price, 10.99, so not a screaming bargain but lets me combine trips) whereas most other GOs just have the KSA, Westfalia, etc (not that good imo).
NOSH: B+. Found stuff here I haven’t seen at other GOs, lots of interesting things. Smaller section, but good picks.
Cheese: B-. Haven’t seen any great finds here but above average. Smaller section than other GOs I’ve been too.
“Ethnic”: B+. I feel like I’ve seen more variety of Asian brands here than other places.
Frozen: B. Well-stocked, many choices.
Pricing: B+ Pricing here seems better than the San Rafael store, with items being .50 to a $1 cheaper.
Checkout: B-. Tends to be pretty crowded but they had 4 - 5 lanes going at once which I don’t think I’ve ever seen at a GO.

Watsonville:
Grass fed beef, various cuts from Pacific Pastures and Marin Sun Farms. MSF 80/20 ground $4.99 a pound
Galbani mozarella, ricotta and mascarpone, some within two weeks of the best buy date and priced accordingly. I like their whole milk aged mozarella. Not sure how mascarpone and ricotta hold up by the end of the date span–can anyone enlighten me?
Carr Valley Menage butter (sheep, goat and cow cream) $3.99
Strauss snickerdoodle ice cream pints
Joe’s premium black mission figs 1 lb $4.99. These are often available for a week or so at Trader Joes in a two or three pound flat

I can enlighten you on the whole milk mozzarella! Yesterday I had the last ball from a container of the Galbani and thought, hmm this tastes a little sour - checked and best by date was August 9, so three weeks past. But I had it from the same container last week and thought they were delicious - 2 weeks past best by date. G.O. on Bayshore in SF had them 2 for $6.
I gotta start paying more attention to these dates.

I finally went to the one in Vacaville, because it was in the same strip mall as Fedex.

It seemed clean and big enough, with reasonably good signage.

I found just about everything I was looking for, which was among other things,
some limes and olive oil.

This olive oil seems good. I’m no sommelier, but it was better than what I had at home.

The limes were fine, and what ever this is

…was okay with some figs.

I also got this stilton,

…which I didn’t like so much, but I hope it might grow on me.

Can’t really say much about prices.

East Hayward GO had fancy Crest Pure toothpaste and several varieties of Baja Jerky, which is jerky with Mexican seasonings. I also scored Numi Breakfast Blend tea, at $2.99 for 20 bags (they had several varieties of Numi tea), and sheep’s milk cheddar from Canada. I don’t think I’ve ever had cheddar made from sheep’s milk.

I quite liked that sheep’s milk cheddar -definitely has a manchego-ish nuttiness to it.

Tonight at the PA store:

Edited to add:

Enjoying the Vault 5 as I type.

‘Cabot Creamery is one of the oldest family farm cooperatives in New England, primarily known for their world-class line of cheddars. Jasper Hill works with Cabot graders to hand select vats of young cheese that are suited to graceful cave-ripening. Upon arrival to ‘Vault 5’, a temperature and humidity controlled cave within The Cellars, blocks are coated with lard, brushed and turned in order to cultivate a living natural rind. These traditional methods impart unique complexity to the developing cheese.’

More after a couple of weeks’ absence:

I really like their instant noodle, especially their sauce pack. Haven’t tried these however.

The salt version is yummy.

I cooked up one of those Marin Sun Farms pork chops tonight and it was pretty darn good.

My wife loves Fly by Jing sauces. The Richmond (El Cerrito) store had the Zhong sauce. The San Pablo store has their spicy chili crisp. Got a half dozen of each. It really is half off the retail price and cheaper than anywhere else I’ve ever seen.

Note: The Fall 2022 20% Off Wine Sale is reportedly set to begin Wednesday, November 2nd but I have not yet verified this date. Usually the sale runs at all stores for 1 week which would mean that it runs from Nov. 2 through Tuesday, November 8. The morning of Tuesday, November 8 is also the 10% Senior discount day at Oakland GO from 8 am - 12 pm for those age 55 and older. The wine and senior discounts are applied resulting in a 28% discount on the wines - a double magical event which only occurs on 2 days of the year at Oakland. Some other stores may also have senior discounts on different days.
