I don’t drink alcohol anymore. Back in the younger days, Everclear never caused any ill effects when mixed with OJ or lemonade. Anything like bourbon, whiskey, tequila, vodka or gin would do me in. Everclear was not sold in California, so before the big holidays we’d make a run to Tahoe ir Reno to stock up. Alcohol did not cause my liver problems. An oral anti-fungal did it, I just didn’t know it until recent diagnoses. ![]()
My martini consumption had to be curbed significantly, as my body just doesn’t handle booze as well anymore.
That’s ok. I can sip1-2 and be fine, but any more and I’ll pay for it dearly. A good reminder of what alcohol does to our insides.
I no longer drink besides socially/work or wine with a nice dinner. But back in the day, menudo did the trick but it’s not for everyone. Pozole is good substitute, or chicken soup of any kind.
One Hundred Percent Hangover Cure (sorry, I’m late to the party N, I see you started this 8 years ago but just saw it with the recent revival).
Get in the shower, hot, then keep turning it up hotter as you get used to it, until you’re about done showering and it’s about as hot as you can stand it.
Now, flip it to cold. COLD. And stand under it until you start feeling normal again.
Abso guarantee you’ll have no hangover feels remain, and feel as fresh as a daisy.
Endorphins, baby. It’s what feels good.
I got this from an old SciFi author (Robert Heinlein) in the 1950s and it’s always worked without fail. But it’s painful to actually do. Brr!
I could grok that.
I already shower at the hottest possible temp on a daily basis. And that’s a hard no for the cold shower. Nope, nippity, nope nope.
I’ve only used it for the few, absolutely worst hangovers of my life. It’s hard to do, but it does work.
I’m trying to remember if it was Jubal Harshaw from SIASL who’s quote that was, given he was an MD (and a JD). But it might have been Lazarus Long in TEFL.
I think it was SIASL, but given the intervening half century plus since reading Heinlein, I might be wrong.
Always good for a re-read if you have time. You’re overdue. I usually go through my Heinlein collection about every 20 years; kind of like catching up with old friends.
I even still like the “juveniles” like Have Spacesuit; Will Travel, Starman Jones, Citizen of the Galaxy, "Time for the Stars*, etc.
I have been catching up on Wyndham, The Kraken Wakes and Day of the Triffids.
I am not sure which I like better, but each is both unique and amazing. Plus, Wyndham’s vocabulary is just astounding.
