Truly beautiful food and presentations! I’m sure it tasted as wonderful as it looks!!
Nobody’s mentioned Festivus, December 23. Here are some traditional food ideas:
I didn’t know that Festivus dates from long before Seinfeld. Dan O’keefe wrote the Seinfeld episode. and his father started it in 1966.
Let the Airing of the Grievances begin!
A friend hosts an annual Festivus party. I mentioned it in the menu planning thread for this month:
" Tuesday a friend is hosting her annual Festivus party. She always provides a ham & fixins, and the guests contribute a dish to share. Thinking of making a cambozola dip that’s hugely popular in my Fb WFD group. The Airing of Grievances pole should be absolutely plastered with post-its this year
, but we tend to avoid the Feats of Strength, which one year had people carrying other people piggy-back up a snowy hill.
That’s a hard no.
My friend has been hosting a Festivus party ever since the December after the Seinfeld episode aired.
history dot com also added a Festivus entry.
The 23rd is also Tibb’s Eve in Newfoundland.
Mrs H & I have been celebrating the Return of the Light.
I’ve spent some time in the garden. Not doing any jobs (that badly need doing) but just taking in the flora and fauna and trying to make a connection with both. On a good day, our garden can be an uplifting place. This evening, candles have been lit and we’ve feasted on lamb, cheese and butterscotch cranberry pudding.
My favorite part of Festivus!
I had to look this up – very interesting.
Time in the garden even at this time of year sounds lovely.

What a spread!!
The sugar coat looks picture perfect!
I didn’t travel again for Christmas this year, which was wonderful. I am going to a friend’s for dinner tomorrow but had a few friends over for dinner tonight (Christmas Eve). Pretty low key.. started with some cheeses, shrimp ring and smoked salmon, and then moved on roasted veggies, a radicchio salad, and what I thought was tortière when I bought it.. which ended up being chicken pot pie instead
. Not a traditional dish on Xmas eve but fortunately quite good. We had a small Mont Blanc Buche de Noel that I bought from a french bakery near by. All excellent, but I am very full!!
looks wonderful!
Nice! Similar to the snacky seafood meal we’d planned for last night until it all fell apart.
The bouche is gorgeous!
Staying with the in laws in London for Xmas. Luckily they are only a 30 mins walk from Chinatown. It was a lovely day for a walk, first time having Xmas lunch out.
Peking Duck and Pancakes
Poached chicken with ginger sauce, egg fried rice and pak choi with garlic.
About a quarter of the restaurants were open ( none of my usual faves)We went early and managed to snag a table at some place I’ve never been to before, it was mobbed by the time we left.
It was amazing!
Christmas breakfast was cheater almond cheese Danish in puff pastry, a mixed-citrus salad, chicken breakfast sausage, and a big pot of tea.
Dinner with my father and stepmother, and I don’t yet know what’s on the menu, other than dessert (which I made).
Dinner was an old standby, baked chicken bathed in garlic butter and topped with parmesan and breadcrumbs.
Apple almond cake for dessert.
I didnt get pre dinner photos, so post-chaos will have to do.
I made an enormous standing rib roast for the main (18 lbs!)…it came out stellar. Beautifully done to a lovely medium rare, it was tender ans delicious. It always turns out well, but this year was exceptional.
I also made non-dairy sides, and for the first time the fam tried (and liked!) my offerings. A mixed veg casserole that was green bean casserole-ish (but better…mixed fresh veggies and a from-scratch bechamel stepped it up a level.
The non-dairy mac and cheese got raves, too, and the pumpkin roll all but disappeared.
Mom’s had a big pot of chicken and noodles, apple salad, a peanut butter pie, and a Hoosier sugar cream pie (that was definitely dairy) rounded out the menu.
