Calling Ms Medgirl
Thanks for sharing! My understanding is that Americans really need more fiber above all else. Many of these gut issues people are seeking to remedy would be alleviated if people just ate more beans lol having a varied diet is another important aspect to this. Convenience foods and hustle culture have made it so a large number of people eat essentially the same dozen things for the majority of their nutrition. Doesn’t help that tik tok and the like convince everyone that there is some magic trick to health.
Agree. But I think this year and maybe next year we’ll find out what too much fiber does. Fiber maxxing seems to be the new protein maxxing; it’s all over food YouTube. Going to be a very gassy 2026 for a lot of people.
Interesting turn of events to be sure. I’m guessing mega constipation? Lol that loops into the varied diet thing too. “Maxing” any single thing, not just food, means youre leaving stuff to the way side. Making a “maxing” of anything decidedly not varied. Humans really struggle with nuance and moderation. It’s always all or nothing, this applies to way more than food too. Pretty much every diet trend from the last decade falls into this trap. Our brains are funny, and sometimes very difficult to pilot lol.

In all seriousness, I’m following a free lifestyle health/wellness regimen available through new health insurance, and it is pointing out how relatively low my fiber intake is. And I always thought that I was at least chugging along somewhat decently. I have at least a serving of vegetables (often more) with 98% of my dinners. Half of my lunches I eat out specifically so I can get a fancy salad. Based on my input though I’m not even hitting half of the recommended fiber, so I bought some fiber gummies. Man, this stuff is like reverse GasX.
LOL! I learned recently as well just how little fiber there is in leafy greens. It’s kind of shocking - you can eat an entire bag of spinach and it’s less than a gram! I’ve been supplementing by eating oatmeal and having chia seeds. The latter is really easy: Couple of tablespoons of seeds into some water, stir it up and shoot it. 10+g of fiber, done. I don’t have any gas issues from that but YMMV!
I love carbs!
Should be the opposite with fibremaxxing.
Duh! My bad lol
Actually, if one overloads the system with a gush of fiber and the system is not used to it, it can lead to constipation. Especially if one does not hydrate appropriately.
i recently started tracking my fiber as well. i was shocked.
a little research revealed the most fiber-full things i was willing to eat are:
- berries (i have gallons of frozen local berries in my freezer that i put up last year. i use them frozen with greek yogurt in a blender with a few other ingreds to make a smoothie)
- green peas - surprisingly fiberful, and I like them. cheap to buy frozen. willing to eat these frozen if needed.
- lentils - i struggle with beans, but can tolerate a serving of lentils.
so now i eat a lot more of those things. i can’t do chia. on days when i don’t have at least 2 of those, i have to hustle to get the fiber reco.
I thought i had heard that before too! Appreciate the confirmation
How on earth does this pass for news in this day and age? The NY Times itself has published MANY articles on low-carb dieting over the past several decades, most of which have more meat (see what I did there?
) than this one - not to mention the REAMS of actual research on low-carbing that has been published over the years. Maybe they feel like low-carbing is feeling left out now that GLP-1s have taken over as the new villian of the diet world? Dr. Atkins needs a posthumous kick in the teeth?

Gotta fill those pages, ya know?
There’s a reason I didn’t post it in the food media & news section.
All-Bran Buds® Cereal - WK Kellogg Co Canada
A bowl of these with blueberries, dried prunes and almonds with 2% milk keep the machine running. I also add them to my morning yogurt with the same toppings as well.
