We’re all living a lie.
A delicious*, crunchy, nutty lie.
*Cashews excluded.
My mother used to make these- the photo makes my mouth water!
Agreed. I shudder to think how many I’d eat if I didn’t have to shell them. I’m just glad they stopped dyeing them red and white.
I love walnuts in salads too. And in things like these little salamis, which I don’t seem to be able to find anywhere in the US.
Nuts make almost everything better — even more so than bacon.
I like nearly all nuts, I used to dislike Brazil nuts but recently changed my mind. Pecans I run hot and cold on, and I’m probably the only person on earth that really dislikes hazelnuts. My favorites are cashews, almonds, macadamias, pistachios, walnuts, pine nuts, et cetera.
I hope this isn’t too much of a “thread drift”, but I also like to chop up peanuts and use them as a topping in this dish. I got the idea from the “Yeung Man Cooking” channel on youtube, where the presenter tops his Peanut Butter Chili Oil noodle dish with chopped up peanuts and white sesame seeds. The crunchy salty peanuts really take this dish to the next level. Here is my version…
Here is the original recipe…
I’ve since switched to using “crunchy” peanut butter in this dish to add even more texture and crunch.
Toasted slivered and sliced almonds - baking, green beans amandine, salads
Marcona almonds - cheese plates/tapas, etc
Toasted chopped pecans - baking, salads
Chopped walnuts - baking, salads
Pistachios in shell and shelled - entertaining, pestos, baked goods and salads
Virginia peanuts - Chinese food, snacking/entertaining
Roasted salted pepitas - salads, bread
Roasted salted cashews - snacking/entertaining, occasionally Chinese food or for vegan mayo
Now you’ve gone too far.
Don’t I always?
always in my freezer. in no particular order: pecans, sliced almonds, pistachios, pine nuts, hazelnuts.
Walnuts and almonds are local, fresh and inexpensive. Almonds are delicious but walnuts are healthier so I try to incorporate that into my diet as much as possible. Also pumpkin seeds because they are nutrient dense and provide minerals. Supposedly Brazil nuts have nutrients women need and only one a day is sufficient but I can’t get into the habit.
