What's on your mind? (2025) - good way to start... even if a bit early... :-)

You, too

I missed this story in 2022.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.

I hate Daylight Saving Time.

OK, I laughed out loud at that one! Perfect!

Half the US wants to keep daylight savings time all year, the other half prefers to keep standard time and the third half wants to keep switching. I say move the clocks forward half an hour from standard time and then nobody will be happy!

You know you’re in the country when the face you see peeking through your sliding door belongs to a mink. One of these little guys lives below our deck. We see it every now and then. Hopefully I’ll have the phone close at hand so I can take a photo next time.

Aww!

I love our little zoo: chipmunks, squirrels, bunny rabbits all make their home in our backyard and beneath our deck. Our cat is actually obsessed with Mr. Chipmunk and stalks him through the sliding glass door that connects our dining room to the patio. He’ll sit there for hours, and like clockwork — the second he’s distracted, e.g. has to lick his butt RIGHT NOW, Mr. Chipmunk will show up just to taunt him

We also detect the occasional skunk (even tho I’m mostly immune to that smell :upside_down_face:), and we’ve caught a possum and a groundhog before, both of which were trying to make a home in our front yard — a little too close to the foundation for us to be cool with it.

Across the street, we’ve seen a family of 5 deer a few times now :scream:

Life in the country…

Seeing racoons doesn’t mean you are in “the country”, but this is my favorite critter pic

I’ve seen them in Central Park. Very adaptable, those trash pandas.

I just watched an episode of “The Americas” narrated by Tom Hanks, following a racoon family in Central Park. The show said something like urban racoons are less nocturnal, apparently because of an absence of predators!

It was daytime when I saw the raccoon, so this checks out.

One of the things I really enjoy while down in Florida is seeing and listening to the indigenous birds. I have an app that recognizes them by sound, and apparently there are two fish crows on the tree I can see (and hear) from the pool

the Merlin app for the win.

This is Picture Bird, which I discovered after being bored to death taking walks & having made them far more engaging by getting Picture This, which is for plants :slightly_smiling_face:

There’s also a mushroom version.

I just got Merlin but I’ve been using Birdnet for years. Not that familiar with the differences/similarities between BirdNET and Merlin yet, but both are from Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

I mostly use Pl@ntNet for plants.
