What's on your mind? (2025) - good way to start... even if a bit early... :-)

I guess now we know the answer to the age-old question… ā€œWHERE’S THE BEEF?ā€

It’s at @CCE’s house, everyone!

Haha. Not as bad as the year I laid up 8 of the full roasts! That year I hosted 2 parties with a group of old coworkers. You get 7 large steaks, 1 per bone, generally about 2.75 pounds/1250 grams, +/- a quarter pound. I let them draw straws for the smallest and largest. Not that even the ~2.25 pounder gets finished, so they all have leftovers to take back. They bring the sides and beer.

I do plan to get a 4th full roast today, which hopefully will be my last day in a grocery until after Christmas.

Those folks have it hard enough on Thanksgiving eve and Christmas Eve without me adding to the mix. Luckily all the big chains here do close early on both Eves, and are fully closed on the day.

Lucky coworkers & fam! I’m still on the fence about the rib roast at $5.99lb. It’s still $57 for a ā€œsmallerā€ one. I was gonna ask in the Aldi thread if anyone’s seen the rib roasts there. They didn’t have any last year, but the previous xmas I waited till January, and they were 50% off.

Nice! I’d be really happy with $6. With what i have so far that’d be about $230 saved.

All the stores here are 9.5 - 10/lb. I (just now, didn’t think about it until your comment) checked the big 3 corps, selecting stores in less affluent areas (even in a neighboring state with a kind of ā€œsouthern rust beltā€ area about 1.5 hours away), thinking they might be cheaper, but nope.

Edit - I’ve never seen them in Aldi, and my local store’s website doesn’t list it. I did get a hit on prime rib dog food…

My guess is they can’t offer them at the price they did last time around, or it’s due to the general shortage. If I make it there today I’ll ask what the scoop is.

I will be heading to Wegmans tomorrow morning before 9 a.m. for my filet mignons from the butcher’s counter, and few other things. Then I’m home for awhile. (Can’t WAIT for that!)

Nothing like a xmas eve afternoon spent at the ER

My local megamart was selling so many SRRs that they didn’t even bother to put them on foam trays! To make 2-, 3-, or 4-bone roasts they were just cutting them and bagging them! Full price was $28/lb., sale price as $13/lb., but if you’re a ā€˜member’, it was only $8/lb. for choice. Going to season it up now, for reverse-sear tomorrow.

How is your poor PIC doing? Was it diverticulitis?

I am so sorry. I hope this trip works!

Oh no. Hoping it’s nothing serious.

It is, so he’s on MOAR amoxicillin that did fuckall for his sinus infection that still lingers

But he also gets to ā€˜wear’ a catheter until he can see a urologist next week. Apparently (sorry, not the greatest topic for a food board :grimacing:) he’s been storing more urine than is healthy for him, which exacerbated the diverticulitis pain. Ugh.

@mts thank you kindly. You’ve been dealing with so much more serious shit, and for much longer.

Let’s hope 2026 is better on all counts. For all of us.

I’m so sorry to hear that, but at least they were able to diagnose the issue, and start treating him. Here’s hoping for a quick recovery, and that you are able to salvage your Xmas party tonight.

Yeah, party’s been canceled. But that’s alright. Quiet night on the couch with the kitties it is.

Worse things in the world, for sure

Sorry to hear, but it’s for the best. The main thing is that your PIC works on healing. After 24 years of marriage, it’s just another night. There will be plenty more.
