What's on your mind? (2024)

From today’s Daily News (I guess they heard everybody):

Now, Doritos & other chips will give more after ‘shrinkflation’
Chip lovers can expect larger servings of Doritos, Tostitos, Ruffles and Lay’s as PepsiCo reacts to consumers’ complaints of “shrinkflation.”

A PepsiCo representative told CNN customers will soon see 20% more chips in Tostitos and Ruffles “bonus” bags while prices will remain the same. The snack food brand also reportedly plans to grow its 18-count variety packs to include 20 small bags.

Consumer advocate Edgar Dworsky reported in 2021 that certain Tostitos products had shrunk in size by an ounce or two. Years earlier, he also reported that bags of Ruffles Sour Cream & Onion Chips had gotten smaller. Dworsky told CNN he’s pleased to see PepsiCo giving its consumers more bang for their buck.

“It’s about time,” he said. “Chip lovers have suffered through years of downsizings.”

But PepsiCo’s reasons for adding more chips to their bags may not be entirely altruistic.

Company snack sales dropped 1% last quarter, according to CNN, which noted that the price of snacks has risen more rapidly than grocery items overall — 36% since 2020, compared to 21% for all products.

The problem has been compounded by some companies offering less product for the same price.

Shrinkflation, a retail term describing that process, has been seen as greed by critics including President Joe Biden and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Research shows the sale of chips has gone down as customers look for greater value.

According to CNN, many consumers who haven’t limited their salty snack food consumption have switched to cheaper store-brand products rather than going with traditional chips made by multinational corporations.

One analyst told CNN he expects other snack brands to follow PepsiCo’s lead by increasing product quantity.

PepsiCo has not responded to a Daily News request for confirmation.

I don’t buy that. It’s gotta be a higher number.

Saw this on the news last night. Seems to be VERY good, if you ask me!

About 3-4 weeks ago, Tropicana downsized its standard 52 oz. bottle to a 48 oz. one for the same price. I’m really annoyed. I hope this will spur them towards going back to the old size.

One of my employers had a large, wooded campus with 6 buildings set around a lake, with a walking/jogging trail around the lake. The Canada geese population got to be a problem, snapping at people trying to walk to meetings between buildings.

Management hired a guy with a fast RC boat and a fast dog to chase them off. I used to watch they guy work sometimes on the weekends (they stocked the lake and let employees fish a few months a year) and asked him if the geese just go to some other corporate site with a pond and he smiled and said,

  • Yep. It’s a good living. They’ll be back here in a few months after I chase them out of the next 3 or 4 spots.

My friend has a business that uses border collies to humanely chase geese away from clients’ spaces. Including the National Mall. Very cool to watch.

I’m trying to remember, but with your prompt, I do think his was a border collie. Some kind of working or herding dog, anyway.

Years ago we almost bought a border collie but backed out because they seemed to want to stare us down and it was kinda creepy. I suppose they’re great dogs but we just couldn’t handle it. Our bad!!!

I’ve loved the predatory stare on both my border collies, the one I had for many years and the current one. Neither of them had it as the default look, usually when I was about to throw the ball for them.

As mentioned we were in Portugal many years ago- staying in Lisbon and points south. We rented a car with no real plans and just tooled around until we found a place we liked. It’s where I taught Mr Bean to drive a manual transmission. Our next trip would definitely be to Porto. And since we’d be much closer, maybe sneak in a detour to the Azores.

Can recommend. I met a group of friends in Porto this past January. A gem of a city for food and wine. Extremely rainy when we visited—because January—though when we caught sun the city was glorious. Steep hills slope down to the river so wear shoes suited to walking on cobblestones. (I didn’t make the best shoe choice!)

People are exceptionally lovely too. I can’t remember having better conversations as a visitor.

We also booked a driver and a visit to a winery, with lunch, in the Douro Valley. The hills were magical (best navigated by a driver experienced on those twists and turns). Our driver said that these days the valley gets lots of visitors in season, so do plan ahead if you want to get out there.

We used to chase them all the time when I was a kid (in the county). I never see them here in the city, either.

I don’t know if there are any nurses among our community here, but I want to express my deepest gratitude to you and everyone in your profession. The care, kindness, empathy and dedication you demonstrate day in and day out is nothing but superhuman.

Even in the most difficult situations, you remain encouraging and cheerful.

You all deserve hella more praise & attention, and most certainly better pay

Thank you.

Yep. From experience.

Tomorrow marks 33 years since we experienced and survived the 1991 Oakland (California) Hills Fire. The October weather made conditions perfect for the conflagration.
I’m just reading about another fire there right now, just east of the 1991 firestorm. Hoping for the best and be safe out there!

I agree completely. I’ve had to use our (Canadian) hospital system extensively for over a decade, and have met a very large number of nurses.

This is what I posted to my Facebook page a while ago:
