What's on your mind? (2024)

I don’t think anyone was getting “huffy?” I like equestrian, but not dressage; gymnastics but not artistic gymnastics; swimming but not artistic swimming . . . you get the idea. But I certainly don’t turn the tv off in a huff nor do I begrudge those who do enjoy them. It’s just if these events were removed, it wouldn’t diminish my enjoyment of the games in the way that removing track or swimming would. Nor do I enjoy watching these events like I do the track or swimming. Truth be told, I could say the same for basketball and soccer–I get that other people enjoy them, just not my cuppa.

I’m not peeved or huffy, so not sure where you got that from my comment. I just said it doesn’t seem like a sport to me. (My opinion on it.)

But I understand adding different events to the Olympics to get people to watch.

I haven’t watched the Olympics in years, other than what has been on the TV in the kitchen at work this year as I’m passing through. And to watch Snoop Dogg. Because he’s been fun.

I saw DC Mayor and my mind went immediately to –

“Mayor for Life” – Marion Barry

I read Lectroid as meaning more like, people in general. It seems every Olympics, there’s some sport or other that people deride as “not really being a sport”.

Heck, I’m guilty of doing this myself - rhythmic gymnastics was my “that ain’t no danged sport” complaint.

But it is.

As much as curling, anyway… (apologies to our many North Americans North Of the U.S. Border)

I’m still trying to figure out how NASCAR is a sport.

Funny, I said just the other day that auto racing would be the next new olympic sport.

Do they still have the ribbon twirling events?

You missed it!

And, queue the news commentary -

  • The competition — it’s tough to call breaking a sport — has spooled out before large and vocal crowds at the Place de la Concorde. The overall feel from the breaking side is the cheerful “let’s put on a show!” vibe of a high school drama club.

  • In the larger Olympic context, the IOC’s embrace of breaking is like when your parents suddenly start trying to like your music. You appreciate the gesture, but it’s most definitely not necessary.

Is skateboarding a sport?

RIGHT?

I wonder if any of the nay-sayers here actually watched any of the breaking competition. I thought it was one of the most enjoyable, fun, and impressive competitions of the games so far.

Perhaps not on par with gymnastics, but the athleticism, creativity, rhythm, and pure JOY on display was utterly worth it for me.

I never watch(ed) the Olympics, but this and the gymnastics competitions were fun.

I won’t be watching the next games :woman_shrugging:t3:

I saw snippets, but admit I didn’t sit down and watch for an extended period. Then again, that pretty much sums up my approach to Olympic viewing–I’ll watch equestrian (minus dressage), track and swimming with some focus, but the rest is little more than background noise and snippets when I find myself in front of the TV.

Yeah, I watched a bit of dressage. I rode horses for most of my youth, and I’m not a fan of any professional equestrian competition, with racing being the biggest offender for me.

Jumping in particular should be illegal.

I’ve totally sworn off horse racing, but I must admit I enjoy the eventing cross country. My mom and sis understand dressage and enjoy it, but it’s lost on me.

I don’t even know how to work our TV, so I haven’t watched anything. A couple of the kids (who of course do know how to work our streaming services) have been home for the summer but I guess they aren’t interested - they just watch old sitcoms.

I did seek out the women’s 4x400 relay after it was 《 you 》 mentioned it here.

Holy! Cow! What a spectacle that was.

I kind of wish it’d been closer, to see if the US anchor runner could have been pushed into breaking the world record (I read that they did break the existing US record).

At the X Games…

Thomas also ran the third leg on Team USA womens’ gold-medal winning 4x100 relay squad. Sha’Carri Richardson ran the anchor leg, I think in under 10 seconds. I enjoy most of the track events. I enjoy several of the other events too. :person_shrugging:t5:

ETA it was 10.09 seconds

You don’t think it is Olympic worthy?

I don’t have an opinion either way.

There are some great skateboarders at the X Games. If you are into skateboarding, it is entertaining to watch them at the X Games.

I watched the men’s qualifiers, forgot to watch the finals. Some of the moves reminded me of the men’s gymnastic floor exercises. I too thought a lot of athleticism was involved, one handed handstands. :astonished:
