One of my Middle (not Old) English professors once said that non-native speakers of English have a much easier time reading and understanding Middle English than native speakers do. I get it.

My first German teacher was the daughter of German parents,. So she came by her language honestly. :joy: she always told me I sounded like an Austrian. :woman_shrugging:t3:

Oh. Em. Gee. I had to go look this up.

My German prof was a large bear of a man from the Ukraine–he was fluent in seven languages and was very sharp. After he was no longer my prof I discovered he was actually a loveable teddy bear.

OTOH my German prof in college was the most obnoxious woman I have ever met. Ever.

Oh gawd, I’ve been thinking about you and the growing Park Fire. Not again! Be safe and keep cool. Good thoughts being sent your way. Looking forward to tonight’s the pizza reveal.

Not so much a ‘season’ anymore as the dried out west has the fires year 'round. The Park Fire in California is a nefarious arsonist’s doing.

I am aware. It’s the new normal (asshole arsonists aside).

I often wonder about the financials of these situations. I
In theory, the douchebag who started this should be responsible for the damage caused, but unless Elon Musk decides to go camping, there’s simply no possible way for the $ to EVER be recouped from an individual.

I mean, PG&E was responsible for the Paradise disaster years back and even THEY won’t be paying off anything close to the real $ amount of damage.

  • Wednesday morning, she got an e-transfer for $170, and took down the post.

I would have demanded an e-transfer of $220, to account for a 30% or so tip for the server, too.

Paradise, like the Rogue Valley, has fallen prey to entrepreneurial assholes who have bought up properties post fire and have ended up pricing the original residents out of their own area.

My dad’s fingers were so gnarled up with arthritis that once he could no longer hold the string well enough to draw his recurve and compound regular bows, he got some kind of permit for deer bow season letting him use the crossbow instead.

I also grew up in the Midwest and we all had bow & arrows (sanctioned by the parents, usually). One of the many injuries I had to keep hidden was one windy day when the box we’d painted the bullseye on kept falling over in the wind, my friend and I agreed to take turns holding the target for each other.

I was a very good shot, but he… not so much. Got me right in the middle of the thigh and it went in about an inch or so.

I guess I was just lucky we generally used field points for target practice, instead of razor tip broadheads or barbed tips.

Interesting that someone made that mistake in New England. Maybe they were a transplant.

I had items with scallops in them in NH and ME restaurants this past week and both servers pronounced it your way. The first surprised me a bit. I’ve been to NE before, but I guess I never ordered the scollups.
