What's on your mind? (2024)

Most airBnBs or rentals in Europe (including Spain, Greece, Portugal, Turkey, Italy — ya know, places in the south that actually get hot in the summer) never used to have AC.

With record-high heat levels for the last two decades, however, and the trend continuing, things are slowly changing.

Not a single apartment we have EVER stayed in Berlin in the last 23 years has had AC. We simply know better to never rent a place higher up than the second floor, and we always purchase a fan at the beginning of the summer before all the stores are sold out. We stock up on bottled water as well. I wish I were kidding.

Yep, I’ve been following on Twitter.

One local infectious disease expert here in Ontario is encouraging ppl to cook their red meats fully, to 160⁰F, to avoid picking it up.

[[[ 8< long story short >8 ]]] . . .

we have a stand alone 110v portable a/c unit.
it drips the condensate (from the a/c’ing) over the motor - so there’s no “drain”
exhausts thru a hose, using a (sash type) window baffle.

very effective. they’re not terribly expensive either.
if one is unable to get a good night’s rest in a hot&humid situation - definitely something to look into.

If it come to this I’d rather give up meat than overcook it.

Relax. 90 is on the high side for July in NH. Even if it reaches that during the height of the day, it will cool off in the evening. Not to be trite, but I wouldn’t sweat it. As for county records, they may be out of date. Long term forecasts aren’t very reliable, certainly not in New England.
It also depends on where the house is located. I’m guessing on or near a lake. Enjoy your few days in NH.

Well I’m assuming I have a doe and the smallest fawn living on the property now . Could be descendents of Dolores the doe who i encountered 7 years ago . They come to graze and wait for the apples to fall to the ground.
Out on the deck watching doughby grazing on the lawn. No fear . I was starteled this morning while watering when a fawn jumped out . No bigger than a wine bottle lenghtwise . I guess her name is Fawney

Wow! That’s tiny!

I see a few pony sized ones running around here, but I always immediately look for mom to be bearing down on me.

I saw a fawn the night before last, which was probably a couple weeks old. It was the smallest one I’ve seen. Around 1/4 the size of its mother.

I also saw these 3 baby racoons, drinking water at a drain. It was really hot out, so they were probably thirsty. I looked around for their mother. I wanted to make sure she wouldn’t charge when I went to turn off the faucet.

They’re so comical learning to wash everything, and those triangular tails!
Watching them climb down a tree, backwards, is another ‘awww’ moment.

I have one of those roll, around, hose flange through the window portable AC units. I bought it probably close to 30 yrs ago, when the only brand available was a DeLonghi Pinguino. They had just begun to catch on in NYC, where certain buildings didn’t not permit window AC units (the kind that, installed, hang out the window). The Pinguino I bought was monstrous in every respect -huge, heavy, noisy, and expensive ($1200 in 1990’s dollars, IIRC). I still have it. It works. It’s been a godsend during the times when the ac was shut off or didn’t work.

Hilariously, I was asked to disable my ad blocker to view the page. Which is an ad.

I got the same ad blocker message. I declined to disable my blocker–a baked bean pasta salad just doesn’t sound good. I’ll stick to my old pasta salad recipe which uses . . . pasta.

In fairness the “in partnership with” is pretty prominent … and I don’t feel like The Kitchn tries to hide that it’s a ad-driven property. There are brand endorsements on almost every page. That said, the recipe looks like what’s left on your plate after eating at a cookout.

I definitely missed it and only realized after reading a recipe that made no sense that it had to be sponsored content. Yuck!
