Love peashoots. And leaves.
A humongous chili relleno, crispy and gooey, with house made tortillas, on the patio at Tacubaya in Berkeley.
While attending a conference at USC, I finally made my way to Holbox (LA) to see what all the fuss is about. Ordered a little too much food for this solo diner. Got a generous serving of kanpachi ceviche, the scallop aquachile and the very delicious smoked kanpachi taco. Next time, I’ll order more tacos and fewer cold dishes. Overall I was happy with everything. I went on a weekday so I did not have to brave a long line.
I looooved Holbox. (Even though I spent a half hour in line and took a Lyft round trip from my hotel, making it kind of an expensive meal.)
Mezzi rigatoni with a delicious meat sauce.
Dessert was frozen banana ice cream, couple drops of vanilla. Sauce was pineapple rum topped with candied pecans most of which were consumed before getting to the ice cream.
Toasted Denver / Western from Roy’s in Strathroy
Custard tart and some other sweets from a Portuguese bakery afterwards.
We are soup people for lunch during the week. Ginger carrot soup cooked in instant pot. Slice of brie and english muffin on the side.
Microwave reheat of last night’s Crunchy Crumbed Cod (orange roughy) cooked at high temp on a sheet pan bed of herbed frozen peas. I use the full 12-14 oz of peas with half the amount of fish, and stir in lemon-infused olive oil and 3 tsp of dried herbs - chives,/chervil/dill combo works well. The recipe says bake for 12 minutes but we prefer ours baked 20 minutes. This Rozanne Gold recipe from Radically Simple is quick to assemble and very flavorful. Served beside some commercial mac & cheese. Fresh strawberries and whipped cream for dessert. “We have the best leftovers at this house.” per my husband.
" J-SAN Sushi and Market, Steeles & 404, Markham " - Still offering one of the BEST value ( price/selection/quantity/freshness ) Donburi in the GTA.
My sumptuous bowl of luncheon Chirashi, with the following toppings, was less than $40!!
- Blue Fin Chu-toro, Hamachi, Kampachi, Shima-Aji, Madai, Salmon Belly, Botan Ebi (2), Hokkaido Hotate (2), local Uni, Tobiko…augmented with a generous scoop of home-made soy marinated wild Alaskan Copper River Salmon Ikura!
Gorgeous & a very good deal!
Now I’m very glad I decided against posting the smoked chicken, cheddar, avocado, iceberg, mayo & mustard sammich I made for our roadtrip. It was a mess
If the food tastes good, the appearance is secondary!!
10 times out of 10, great tasting curries mixed with rice turned out to be a MESS!!
OTOH, the Farm Boy in my ‘hood (Kanata) makes all of their soups that I’ve tried far too peppery for me.
I live near the Farm Boy on Metcalfe and I haven’t tried their soups yet but I’ve tried their take out meals and have been unimpressed. I like their groceries - their meats and produce are fresh and good quality but their take out meals don’t taste very good.
" PROVIDENTIAL 9, Hwy#7 & Woodbine, Markham " - Reconfirming quality of their Dim Sum offerings are still one of the better ones in the GTA.
Met up with a ‘decades-long’ ex-chowhounder friend, HK Traveller, for a mini-Dim Sum chowmeet. Due to size of our party, narrowed down our selection to the following:
- Steamed Prawns and Choi-Sum Rice Crepe aka Cheung-Fun
( Light and delicate, velvety smooth, translucent, thin wrapper.
Crunchy prawns. Nicely executed ) - Har-Gow Shrimp Dumplings
( Acceptable, taut and chewy wrapper. Crunchy all prawns filling sans bamboo shoots. Juicy, well seasoned filling/interior ) - Fried Taro Puff Croquette
( Fairly light, fluffy, crispy shell. Smooth Taro paste. A touch
under-seasoned IMO. However, still one of the better rendition in
town ) - Fried ‘Harm-Shiu-Gok’, meat filled savory Chinese doughnut
( Grease-less, crunchy and crisp shell. Enjoyable ) - Fresh Mango and Cream filled Mochis
( Refreshing and delightfully moist, not overly sweet )
Smiling service was friendly and attentive
Overall, an enjoyable and satisfactory Dim Sum luncheon outing featuring good food and great company!
One of my favourites, but I can never remember what they’re called, we just call them footballs
I agree.
