Smoked fish again, this time in north of Germany where I’m visiting at the moment.
Yesterday was Ascension and everything was closed but I knew and brought a few things with me from home. Turned out the restaurants were not closed. Too many elderly tourists walking round with money to burn.

I had a beer at a smoked eel specialist where I picked up the eel and rye bread for lunch today.

.

Have never seen so many smoked eels in one place.

I got the smallest one, paid about 16 euros.

Locals drink Schnapp with smoked eels. They even clean their hands with the Schnapp after eating. Apparently it’s the tradition.

The most famous eel specialist in town.

Lunch at my lodging today:

Mettwurst made by a traditional restaurant in town.

Rye bread from this region.

My last day on this traffic-free island in the North Sea.

Regional ham, farmer-style brawn (the rounds are local Mettwurst).

.

Ham in the package is sea air-dried from an island not far from here. Honey with sea buckthorn. Like in the Baltics and Scandinavia sea buckthorn is widespread and very much enjoyed in all sorts of things. The cheese from south of Germany is quite OK. Much better than the typical Dutch-style rubbery stuff that is prevalent here.

Last of my exquisite smoked eel brought from the town I visited last week.

.

The food I’ve been eating this week is more or less like the kind of food I regularly eat at home. But this is actually a typical northern German light meal called “Kutterbrot”. Basically it’s a slice of bread topped with (scrambled) eggs and ma(a)tjes herring. “Kutter” is a kind of small fishing boat. I guess fishermen eat it whilst at sea.

.

Every day after returning from hours of walking around the island I had pastries and beer. This time the poppy seed coils were sold out I tried the “French” pastry. Cinnamon ruins everything.

With imperial tiramisu stout I brought from home.

3 different kinds of cake filled with poppy seeds.

If you put loads of poppy seeds in something I despise I’d probably eat it.

Some beers I brought from home. Down to the last 2 now and will be finished tonight.

Sorry, no pics. Lunch was at a new to me place on the water. Panko encrusted prawns, a cup of delicious clam chowder and some steamer clams. All excellent, drinks were had & were outstanding as well. Gorgeous weather & a fun day! A little RT in the form of treasure hunting at a thrift store before going home. Perfect.

Wow! Was it good?

Really tasty warmed. I drizzled some cinnamon honey on it right out of the toaster oven. Room temp even with the add ins is boring. I think the trick to all the recipes in the book is to enjoy the rounds warm or toasted.

This was a wet dough and baked a full 45 minutes for both small rounds.

Def will bake again. I had some frozen pumpkin puree to use up and this worked perfectly.

Last night’s dinner we can kindly call a culinary mishap. Cold chicken breast tonnato was tasteless, the sauce bland, accompanying veg uninteresting. Perhaps bowing to the scorcher of a day, I under-seasoned everything. At any rate, there was substantial leftover. DH asked if I could “wash off the chicken and make Thai salad.”. Well, better than tossing the entire lot.

Waste not, want not. It’s only lunch.

Start of “new season herrings” was the other day. Ate 2 at the market fish stall and took 3 home. All the fish stalls have extra personnel on the first few days of the season.

Another lunch this week: home-cured salmon (I make it all the time, for weekend lunches)

@presunto I have to say that I always love the pictures you post of your food. Really looks beautiful and delicious.

Repurposing unspoiled food makes me happy. :slightly_smiling_face:

Kobuta, thank you! Japan is my inspiration. I like their philosophy of food: “Let little seem like much. So long as it’s fresh and natural.” I must also add “and beautifully presented”. In Japan the food looks like the photos in the adverts.

Another batch of lemon basil scones. I found a commercial jar of rhubarb jam in the back pantry that I plan to enjoy with them.

Asparagus from a farm near my house. More expensive than most places but I like the taste and prefer to support local farmers.

Cured salmon again.

Sourdough, butter and crispy shallots alongside.
