What's For Dinner #99 - the Orange is the New Black Edition -October 2023

Good for you! for introducing your child to heritage foods!!! Much easier to do nowadays as a parent as our world has become more global.
The only thing my Finnish ancestors could get me to try, and eventually enjoy, was cardamom coffee bread aka pülla, rye cracker wheels and herring pickled in wine vinegar aka marinoitu silli. Three, only three. Squeaky cheese, pass.

Three of us for dinner tonight. I made a rice in a too-small donabe with shimeji mushrooms and carrots. Tiny sautéed eggplant. Cod that was pan cooked with a shio koji marinade. As usual, I forgot all about a picture until midway thru. Son informed me that while I am a decent cook, I suck at documenting my work. Kids. So ego affirming.

Shrimp and Broccoli in Brown Sauce - write up over in the COTM for The Woks of Life.

This was very good and low effort. Next time, I am going to add more white pepper and sesame oil, in addition to some ginger. However, it did get my leftover broccoli and cooked jasmine rice used up!

Your dinner sounds right up our alley, right down to the kid’s unsolicited commentary. I have a big tub of shio koji languishing at the back of my fridge. I gotta remember to use it. This sounds great—we have even more salmon left (it’s B and Spring Onion’s favorite fish). I will try it for the remainder of the salmon. What is your method?

Super easy. Pat the fish dry, rub with the shio koji and let it rest for 4-6 hrs in the fridge. The heat your pan, add oil or butter, and cook the fish. I ended up adding a little water and soy sauce because I started with a too hot pan.

Ooh. Just sent my sil - think she’ll love it too. No Sprouts near me or I’d try it.

Repeat tonight. Thick bone in pork chops.,sautéed with chopped onion since no shallots in the house. Fried apple slices in the same pan. Flamed with apple brandy(ran out of Calvados) and none available at the liquor store. Finished off with half and half. Baby carrots glazed with butter and apricot jam. Canned peas with plenty of butter and black pepper.
ETA: I’m starting to get bored with cooking and I’m not sure why.

Odd combination of leftovers that ended up working remarkably well together.

Dal + rice from the temple yesterday (prasad / offering that I didn’t want to eat there so I put it in a container and brought it home).
Fish + spinach + lemon potatoes from Greek dinner a few nights ago
A tiny bit of green chilli and mustard pickle (unnecessary)
Papad

Very satisfying. The prasad dal-rice was absolutely delicious (I have been told it somehow always is).

Pork tenderloin, seared and roasted in beer and KC Masterpiece. The last of the garden hericots verts, blanched and sauteed in butter with ham and shallots. Salad of tango lettuce, cucumber, red pepper, green onion, Sun Sugars from the garden, creamy Greek dressing. A Manhattan and wine.

Cantonese ground beef with peas, served over steamed rice (recipe from Omnivore’s Cookbook). Leftover cabbage and noodle stir-fry. An egg on top, and chili crisp on the side.

Leftover carnitas, low liquid borscht (I barely add liquid, and we eat it as a side), perogies, mushroom frittata, and eggplant with tomato sauce and Parm

That all sounds so good. I want that frittata!

It was really small, just olive oil, roasted onions, 3 eggs, cremini, dill and Gouda. I wanted something other than pork for my protein tonight.

It happens. I’ll go on a cooking tear, making good meals and posting pictures several times a week to just not feeling it and making easy repeats, sandwiches, or ordering takeout and becoming a ghost on here for weeks.

On my days off, that used to be the time for a grand undertaking. Now on my days off, I usually don’t want to bother.

Kare Raisu with chicken thighs, potatoes, carrots, ginger, garlic scallions, chicken broth, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce and curry paste (which was made from turmeric, coriander, ginger, cardamom, cumin, cinnamon, fennel seeds, fenugreek, garlic powder, brown mustard, sugar, butter, flour and miso). Served with sushi rice and fukujinzuke

Yes it looks like we have the same dish but I think mine is a knock off. The name “Tre CI” is engraved on ithe bottom of the bowl then “made in Italy for” and a bunch of Chinese characters. It was a gift from my mom and she most likely bought it at Stokes (kitchen store). Mine has a small crack in it as a result of me putting a very hot meal in the bowl.

There’s a newish Detroit style in Seattle and everyone here has lost their minds about it. Called Moto. Takeout only. You can walk in at 4 or so and get a slice. Supposedly. Or you can order takeout to pick up in 2 months. Yes. They’ve opened at the baseball stadium too, but the one game I attended this season, they ran out of their 1000 dough balls about 30 people in front of my in line. This was about an hour into the game.
