Last night’s dinner was pork chow mein using the last of the bbq’d pork I bought on a recent trip to Chinatown.
Now that I can get behind.
A celebratory meal with dear friends at what I consider to be the best restaurant between PGH and PHL. Stellar. Prix fixe of $100/per person plus 15% autogratuity, BYOB. And boy, did we BOOB
Amuses (clockwise from the bottom): roasted tomatoes with black olives, French radish with smoked butter and dusted with something I forgot, perfectly seared duck breast, and a shot of sweet corn bisque with vanilla and smoked corn husk rim
Soup was too sweet for my taste, but I’m generally not a fan of winter squash for that very reason.
Salad was a bit too sweet for me as well.
The scallop was the highlight of the meal for me and several others in our group.
Intermezzo: paw paw sorbet. Absolutely delish and refreshing. Hyper-local, too
Fabulously tender, flavorful lamb. Didn’t care much for the goat cheese farro - not fond of the texture.
There was barely any room left for dessert, but I managed to finish one churro, the marshmallow, and a bit of the chocolate dip.
Still not hungry at this point…
Your birthday?
Mañana. Finally turning 21 for the …th time
Kidding, of course. It’s actually 22.
Happy Birthday!
Just reading the menu, before I got to your descriptions, I thought to myself that the soup and salad would likely be too sweet for me. But everything else looks great!
Granted, Imasaltybish ;-), but both could’ve used more salt just for seasoning, and as a counterpart. The blue from Goot Essa was too mild to stand up to the cider, honey, and apples, and the squash soup was going to be too sweet for me in any iteration. A hint of heat or other umami components would’ve been welcome here.
PS: Thank you
Happy happy
Early Happy Birthday to you…what would be your ideal birthday dinner?
Imma guess pappardelle with chanterelles and…hmm…grilled lamb chops? With a big salad.
That scallop item and the sorbet look spectacular! Yum!
Happy Birthday to you late September and early October Libras!
Teriyaki chicken thighs, roasted Japanese sweet potatoes, pasta with miso butter and a splash of oyster sauce, and sesame green beans (which I somehow ruined TBH).
A cup of leftover last night’s soup (was better fresh than leftover), deviled eggs (thanks to @shrinkrap and the New Orleans thread) and the last of the smoked olives with jalapeños and garlic.
Went simple tonight: the fifth of my six Copper River sockeye salmon filets from Seabear was low-roasted at 275° for 18-20 minutes, with a glaze of char-siu sauce mixed with a spicy sweet chili sauce.
Buttered green beans alongside, with wine. The wine is too oaky and grassy for me, so I won’t buy it again.
Oven roasted hot Italian sausage, squash casserole made with ritz crackers, butter sour cream, cheddar. Fresh green beans sautéed in bacon fat, onion, white wine and a splash of balsamic. Some store brand crescent rolls waiting on a pat of butter.
“ MANA KITCHEN, Markham “ - Returning for more!
Our first visit to this Markham hidden gem casual eatery was welcomed by some pretty well-executed and tasty food. However, we only managed to cover a small tip of the ‘menu iceberg’. With many more appealing dishes waiting in the wings, a quick return visit to further try them out was a no brainer.
This evening, we followed through from what we left off the last time, by ordering the following well received house specials:
- Baked fried rice with pork chop, tomato sauce and cheese casserole.
- Braised rice with winter melon, fish balls and fried fish skin in fish soup.
- Baked fried rice with ham and seafood in a creamy white sauce casserole.
- ‘ Best Club Sandwich in the Cosmos’…featuring grilled pork chop, bacon, ham,
tomatoes, fried eggs, cheese and lettuce.
The above were some mighty impressive tasting Hong Kong cafe style comfort food. Lovingly crafted and immaculately executed and plated. Both baked rice casseroles were superior to a lot of their in-town competitors. Their elevated taste profile was more refined and spot on. The braised rice in fish soup was healthy, hearty and unique and loaded with tons of umami goodness. As for the Club Sandwich, the presentation alone speaks for itself! Arriving at our table still piping hot, this was one masterpiece of sandwich making!!
All in all, a most gratifying and well priced, humble and delicious meal. With these excellent value and delectable products, rest assured there will be many more returned visits from us.
Nah. A seafood extravaganza with lots of sashimi, crudo, uni, oysters, crab, steamed & grilled shellfish and martinis. That’s really all I ask for
Nice fish. I understand about the wine . Its like a pinot grigio . Way to grassy for my taste.
Salmon with grapes, clementines and pine nuts
