It’s a cooked crab, where it’s sold with the flesh already picked through and presented back in the shell. The classic presentation is for there to be a central line of the white meat, with a strip of the brown meat either side. As this - http://www.clevercuisine.co.uk/prodpics/dressed_crab.jpg
Husband is away, so a friend of mine is coming over for girls’ night dinner! I just made some stuffed mushrooms (mushroom innards, sauteed with onion and herbs, then mixed with crispy bacon and some gruyere cheese) and will roast some Brussels sprouts in the leftover bacon fat. Main dish will be chicken in a tomatillo-sesame sauce that I made a couple of weeks ago and froze, refreshed with some fresh cilantro and chicken stock. I’m making bread but it seems to be rising much more slowly than expected, so I might run to the store for a baguette or just make some rice to go with the chicken if she is in the mood for carbs.
I’d like it less done as well but if it tasted great and the partner was happy then it’s fine.
To our well being! I like my exciting weekdays and weekends at home.
It’s a pity I’m allergic to North Sea brown crab. It was really bad allergic reactions every time I tried the crab. But that was years ago. Am still afraid to touch it after all those years.
Weather was absolutely gorgeous here today. However, I shall wait til May be out.
Another BBQ, my third now. Stunning weather today. Everyone seemed so happy these sun deprived creatures.
Blackbird parents who have a nest full of fledglings metres from where we ate would get irritated by every little move I made. One brave fledgling took the big leap just before noon today. It’s been hopping round the garden since. The rest of the siblings will probably leave the nest tomorrow. They will be round for 2 weeks after that and then we can eat or sit without getting on their nerves.
OK, the food!
The last day or so, we have blackbird wars. Mr & Mrs Blackbird have visited the garden for a couple of years now, so they must nest close by. However, there’s another male trying to have his wicked way with Mrs B - Mr B keeps chasing him off.
Headed out tonight for prime rib at the Dinner house and lounge at the Railroad park and museum in Dunsmuir ; apparently it’s inside a antique dining car .
Looks fantastic, not a fan of the sous vide method, but it sure looks like it worked well. (Even if slightly over cooked for you) Glad she enjoyed!
That pizza looks sooooooo good! The potatoes do as well but unless I’m mistaken there are only 93 layers, everyone knows the last 7 are the best!
Pre-Mothers Day Dinner was wife’s choice and she wanted Chicken Scampi. I mixed in some broccoli since I’m not having the pasta I served on the side. It was good…she was happy so that’s what matters.
Hey all your mom’s here please have a wonderful Mothers Day, hope you have all the culinary delights that you desire! God Bless! (God Bless my mom as well, miss you mom!!)
I freaking LOVE that “I limit myself to one glass a day” glass, @Presunto!!!
A great afternoon spent with Mom, my sister and BIL. Lunch was sandwiches from Joppa Fine Foods in Newburyport. I was drooling, yet again, at the cheese case with a humongous slab of membrillo. Love this store.
Tonight’s dinner is a Peter Brady Special - pork and applesauce. A small pork loin rubbed with a combo of minced fresh rosemary and thyme, minced garlic, minced dried lavender, and salt and pepper, all mixed with olive oil. Saran-wrapped to marinate all day while up at Mom’s, roasted in a 425°F. oven until at 145°F.
Roasted sweet potatoes with salt, pepper, and grated nutmeg, and steamed green beans, along with some of my Triple Apple Applesauce. Was there wine? Well, like DUH.
Outlander on the tube tonight.
Prime NY steak (50% off), sauteed mushrooms and kale salad. Really good.
PS: I wish when people say WHAT their dinner is going to be, it would be great if they reported back on th result. ???
Due to a late afternoon re-discovery of peanut butter pretzel nuggets (Pretzel! Crunch! Salt! Peanut butter! Creamy!) I really wasn’t interested in dinner, and then had a birthday party drinks thing to go to.
So my very late dinner was garlic knots from the pizza shop on my way home, and leftovers of massaged kale salad i had made for lunch. Which obviously counteracts moscow mules, right…??
Upcoming…cauliflower, chicory & chickpea salad. Cauli gets a blanch and is then mixed with the other two main ingredients, along with raisins, red onions, mint and hazelnuts. Dressing from olive oil, lemon zest & juice, garlic, cumin, ground coriander, paprika and a touch of sugar.
It’s a new recipe for us, which was intended originally as side dish. However, I reckon it sounded so good I’ve decided to make the full quantity as a main course.
Stunning, as ever, P!
Yesterday was about as perfect as a day in Berlin could possibly be:
Went shoe shopping (successfully) and picked up what we like to call “crack” – a creamy spread with scallions available at the local chain Butter Lindner. Came home for coffee, then went out to the canal for some early eve beers while listening to a very talented combo (female vox, guitar, bass, drums).
Sent my man to grab a small pizza at the same place we used to soak up the booze during our first dating days (yes – amazingly, that place is still around) and hung out till the kids packed up their instruments.
Went back home, then off to cocktail bar REINGOLD just around the corner from us for a few libations (martinez and a few martinis) … and finally finished off the evening with wings, sliders & fries at the local burger chain The Bird, which is run by a NYC ex-pat. There was beer, mezcal, more beer… and I think I may have gotten the owner a little too high
Oh well. He probably walked it off getting his sweet German shepherd home - a good 10 miles for them.
Today is just as gloriously sunny. We’ll have a small brunch at home (gotta have some of that “crack”), and later head over to the Thai Park for afternoon sun, cocktails, dinner and maybe even a massage.
Life is good. Happy Sunday, HOs!

Ditto the ???
Think I have a repair man coming tomorrow to look at my range. Knowing I would be without I prepared quiche (mushroom/shallots/Canadian bacon/havarti) and vichyssoise during the week at my boss/friends home which was split between the two of us to make for easy weekend meals. I also hard boiled a few eggs for me (green salad add on or in tuna salad sandwiches) and made more simple syrup for the humming birds.
Had a “duh” moment last night and remembered a crockpot can be used for more than making stock.
Soaked pinto’s last night and began cooking them this morning. They will become chili tomorrow.
I’m in the process of packing up/decluttering my house in order to put it on the market. I need to be closer to work and be home early enough to actually get things done. The house looks like an episode of Hoarders with boxes and packing material every where. Storage unit has been rented and making several trips with the car loaded each day I’m home. Wish I could channel Samantha and wiggle my nose and have it done!
As in did it measure up to your expectations? Will you likely repeat it? Would you change anything?
