What's For Dinner #82 - June 2022 - the Scary Campfire Stories and Sticky S'Mores Month

Dinner tonight was leftovers (again).

Meal out on our back deck tonight, listening to birdsong and enjoying greenery. The construction crew for the fire station on the corner stopped their heavy-equipment (beeping / dust clouds) early – they’ve been working until sundown a few nights. Porterhouse steak cooked on the grill by my husband while I did the indoor cooking: sauteed mushrooms, a microwaved sweet potato, tossed salad. Dessert was rhubarb upside down cake that I baked this morning.

This week’s stir fry offering is shrimp and broccoli. I used three Thai red chilis which proved to be just enough heat.

There was a G & T.

MMmmm what kind of gin? Also you got me interested in surreal and suboptimal dining experiences. I have lots but not sure we should continue. It would be fun though.

Lovely. Speaking or typing of eating whilst in an altered state of mind, my SO and I got invited to a little party in Doylestown Pa many moons ago because a close friend of mine vouched for us. Whatever we were offered it must have been strong because this was not our maiden voyage. For those who have never tried it, the medicinal messes with your sense of time. A lot. For someone who likes yellow cake with rich chocolate icing this can be a transcendent experience. Our exremely generous host brought us unasked a generous slice of cake. That cake was so good. Everything slowed way down and it seemed like we had hours and hours to slowly savor that cake. Cake will never be the same for me.

We have a big greek diner here in the Lansdale area called the star diner. Before the plague it was open 24/7. How did I know it was Greek? The constant display of fresh delicious baklava was a hint. One time my friend conan and I went for some late night vittles. The salad bar (remember those?) was taken down. We had been in a card tournament and were enjoying one of the best parts, the debriefing when we hear loudly “puzzy puzzy puzzy you fing puzzy” The recipient of this abuse demanded a different table for some strange reason. The gang member dressed in gang colors, a hat and shirt followed our fellow customer who was a member of a rival gang. At the time and probably still now gang member were required to call out rivals. The aggressor kept gesturing for his opponent to step outside. It was terrifying but staff members intervened that time. Whew.

That is what conan’s dad drinks exclusively

The next time we went to the star diner (notice how I never learn) there were four of us and we ate heartily tipped well and played cards for quite awhile. They let us. I had no way of knowing this but one of the male members of our party complained that they could at least deal their drugs in a stall rather than right in the open there in the men’s room, One other night some of our friends were playing the Order of the Stick board game. I have that game too. Now for my favorite Tales From the Star Diner, soon to be a movie. High school had just let out and there was some crazy energy in the night. Cdc and I had bought some new mtg decks and were planning on looking them over and getting a bodacious late-ish breakfast. Two seats down right next to the bathrooms was a three some. Two men and a woman. The men were very very polite to the waitress. I had a feeling they were regulars. Little did I know that this was their business office. The lovely young lady was wearing a disney themed dress and awesome knee high boots. Directly behind us was four clueless teenagers. They were apparently also regulars because when the business woman got up to pee they referred to her as the fat hooker. I held my breath but the two pimps apparently did not hear. Shortly afterwards I had to pee and the pimps were outside catching a smoke. She had set down her phone after trying to drum up some business and as I walked past she complimented me on my dress and belt. I told her she could find the belt at target but the dress was a hand sewn dress had no label and was an incredible good will find. My dress really is amazing. I glowed with pride and delight. When we left I saw their van, ready for business.

How annoying to hear the sound of construction day in and day out. The City of Ottawa (where I live) replaced a water main right in front of my apartment building when the pandemic first hit and the construction crew were given permission to continue the work right through the night the first week of work. So for one week we heard jack hammers and a shaky building 24/7 then daytime only for three months afterwards. Everything was closed at the time including the parks so I couldn’t even sit in a park during the day to escape the noise. A friend suggested I fill the hole with bubble bath and see how that works  Hopefully the fire hall construction won’t last too much longer.

After basically a solid week of all restaurant meals it was time for a light, home-cooked dinner. Well, ‘cooked’ in the broadest sense of the term. I fried up some pancetta to top a big-ass salad, that’s about it. Organic mixed lettuce, vine materz, cuke, buffalo mozz, crispy pancetta in a simple vinaigrette.

Was hopeful to finish off the marinated zuke & eggplant, but couldn’t. It truly was a BIG. ASS. SALAD.

Off to Lisbon tomorrow to continue gorging ourselves

Our favorite restaurant in Lisbon, Assinatura, has closed, unfortunately. But we can also recommend Beira Gare and Cervejeria Ramiro. Beira Gare is famous for its bifana, a marinated pork sandwich. If you order this, make sure to have some wet tissues spread out before you start eating. You’ll still have to wash your hands in the rest room, but before you have started with the initial cleaning, you won’t be able to touch anything.
Ramiro is famous for seafood. We enjoyed it a lot, but we had to stand in line an hour to get in.

Had a very nice meal that I enjoyed last night; will eat the leftovers tonight. Fried some potatoes with a slant towards Greek flavor, plain egg “omelet” with nothing inside, a leftover biscuits, a couple of green stems from green onions, and some bacon wrapped asparagus that I cooked in the air fryer. I know this doesn’t make sense, but I have cooked asparagus twice now leaving the woody ends on and the asparagus seems to taste so much better to my palate. Can’t figure it out.

Thank you for the tip! We have made two reservations in advance — one at Ramiro for Saturday night, and one at Prado on Sunday, an incredibly cheap Michelin one star. @mariacarmen also recommended a great market with various foods :relaxed:

I’m confident we won’t starve :pig::pig::pig:

Picking a favorite gin would be like picking my favorite child. Literally impossible :cocktail::cocktail::cocktail:

any more crazy late night meals posts? This one which you already read got flagged and I think it was because of one word I quoted. Not sure though so going to repost with the one word changed. I did not mean to offend anyone and I apologize to whoever flagged me. Testing one two three: We still have two big greek diners nearby and another one a little bit further away. We used to go to Michaels Diner and play cards and eat. We tipped well and they were very tolerant there. It was a couple of days before halloween and I like to start early so I was in costume. When I went up to pay as I approached there were three teenagers ahead of me. The girl was doing the angry rude goth chic thing and she said “Everyone dresses like a dumb person around halloween. Like that lady.” I grinned at them and the two boys whispered for her to settle down because I was nice. This is a treasured memory for me. My one card playing friend was pretty into goth so I knew a bit of the culture. As a fan of the Adams Family I understand Morticia Adams was the patron saint and I wondered if anyone had ever watched that show? Morticia was the opposite of rude and angry. Go figure. https://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=AwrFFPOlZ6liK.MrY9yJzbkF;_ylu=c2VjA3NlYXJjaARzbGsDYnV0dG9u;_ylc=X1MDOTYwNjI4NTcEX3IDMgRhY3RuA2NsawRjc3JjcHZpZANwN05vQlRFd0xqS2hnSmloWHg1V19BWG5PVGd1TVFBQUFBQnB5c0hyBGZyA3lmcC10LXMEZnIyA3NhLWdwBGdwcmlkAwRuX3N1Z2cDMARvcmlnaW4DaW1hZ2VzLnNlYXJjaC55YWhvby5jb20EcG9zAzAEcHFzdHIDBHBxc3RybAMEcXN0cmwDMjIEcXVlcnkDYmVsYSUyMGx1Z29zaSdzJTIwZGVhZAR0X3N0bXADMTY1NTI2OTI5Ng–?p=bela+lugosi’s+dead&fr=yfp-t-s&fr2=sb-top-images.search&ei=UTF-8&x=wrt#id=220&iurl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2F76Mj5OPE0ro%2Fmaxresdefault.jpg&action=click

So much this. I’m on a Broker’s kick at the moment, but recently you couldn’t turn my head from Greenhook. Hendricks will always have a place in my heart. Also Plymouth. And Death’s Door! How could I forget you.

Conan’s dad won’t touch the sapphire. The hard lock down was rough for him. Our Penna liquor stores all closed March 16th that year even though it was announced they would be open for St Patrick’s Day. An online ordering system was eventually set up with bureaucratic efficiency. Sigh. I was so lucky that I had two options locally, Boardroom Spirits and also Imprint Beer. You could only get vodka at Imprint well beer too but that place is so much fun. Especially then as it had this forbidden quality about it like a speakeasy. Conan’s dad had to suck it up (pun intended) and drink boardroom spirits gin for a time. Going to have their ginger flavored vodka tonight. https://boardroomspirits.com/
