I was about to suggest agar agar - that’s what we use for the vegetarians in our family when gelatin is called for in a recipe.
thanks. good suggestion
gelatin really makes gravy/sauce so much richer.
It was a very good day, even though I was on the road off and on from 9:30 a.m. to about 4:30. I didn’t mind, as there was bright blue skies, beautiful sunshine and 48° temps. I’ll take it!
A very good visit with Mom. She was animated and talkative.
Great shopping at the Used Book Superstore in Burlington for Mom. Hopefully she likes a few of the books I picked out for her.
Got what I needed for work at BJ’s Wholesale Club.
Got some Amazon Prime discounts on purchases at Whole Foods. Always willing to get some pricing discounts on WF items. LOL
Dinner was seared scallops with cognac cream sauce, rice pilaf, and asparagus. And wine.
Yes, it does! I honestly forget where I got this bottle, which is going to kill me when I run out of this one, because it’s not sold on Amazon, but it’s definitely affiliated with the cooking school. Scroll to the bottom for the links for the cooking school and Ballymaloe House.
And @Harters, your dinner sounds wonderful!
Weekend dinner was eating out at a Japanese Izakaya.
A few highlights:
Octopus salad with seaweed and cucumber
Squid with sea urchin sashimi
Smooth eel on rice - simply sublime.
The whole report is here:
Yesterday meal was reheating the mussels with a homemade fish broth noodles.
Thanks, Linda. Looking at the UK stockists, I see my normal supermarket is one - although only branches that have an Irish food section. The supermarket tends to have specialist ethnic sections that reflect a local community. Presumably no concentration of Irish people near as our specialist sections are kosher and South Asian (which would reflect the local community).
NOT cool.
Last night we had a great dinner at Tillie’s in Millburn, NJ. The report and pictures are in the below link.
Aubergine “cassoulet”.

Take-out pizza last night, due to me being incredibly hungover from a night at friends’ the night before because i forget i’m not 20. or 30. or 40. BF made a good salad to go with. Our neighborhood pizza joint is pretty good, and i love that ordering “a slice” of any kind means you get two.
today, i cook!!
Husbands out a town for a bit, so I’ll be indulging in fatty meat for a bit! Plan to start with my Wagyu today.
Also, fresh garbanzos!
Funny how a few glasses can make you forget that! Takeout pizza is the best antidote, though.
Portuguese proverb: “more the next day is the cure”.
Not for me. I drink water alongside the alcohol, lots of it. And after, and during the night as well (I’m sensitive for dehydration). Can’t drink like when I was in my early 20’s anymore. Well, I could but would rather not.
Hangovers really do get worse with age, especially true for women. One of the reasons is the body can’t process alcohol so well anymore. Women have less of those enzymes in the liver to break down alcohol.
I’ve never cooked fresh chickpeas - they are gorgeous!
Last night was Korean short ribs with garlic spinach and rice/quinoa mix.
Earlier, I waffled the last of the mixed lentil batter I had made idlis from, and loved the crunch.
What a great idea! Looks delicious.
Nice! Where did you find them?
