What's for Dinner #35 - The Summertime In The City July 2018 Edition

The rest of that fennel bulb needed to be used, i just sliced super thin on my mandolin with some apple, added edamame and sunflower seeds. Added some tahini miso dressing after the photo, there was kombucha a la carte.
There’s a coconut popsicle from the bodega in the freezer for dessert later. It’s some random spanish brand that’s delicious (just coconut milk, coconut, water and sugar) and they sell individually

I love fennel and don’t buy it often enough. Actually just bought one a while back. Every part of it is useable from the fronds to the stalks to the bulb

Improvised freezer Mexicanish stewish thing for dinner tonight with ground beef, chicken chorizo, onions, peppers, chile, cumin and paprika. Very tasty topped with sour cream, pickled jalapenos and olives. Brussels sprouts roasted with smoked paprika and parmesan cheese and topped with garlic-lime mayonnaise alongside. Addictive.

That’s crazy. It’s a very cool old brewery with an amazing open-air copper fermenter. And the beers are distinctive and good - but that is highway robbery. There had better be unicorn tears inside!

Not sure if you were kidding, but I didn’t see it in the restaurant store in Beijing nor here in Shanghai. (Arrived in Shanghai today, first stop restaurant store.)

This insanity has been going on for years and years. One of the many reasons I distance myself from the craft beer scene, which is full of beer terrorists and extremists. Cantillon is one of the very top most desirable brands for “trading”. Prices are astronomical as you’ve read in the review. Thing is, there are enough people who are willing to pay that kind of price so the insanity goes on. Posting a selfie of one next to their Cantillon beers has become some sort of “status” in the beer scene these days. I prefer to enjoy drinking it (in private) with someone whose company I value.

If you are ever in Brussels do check out the brewery and try some of their beers there. Some of their beers are comparable to sparkling wines. Spectacular examples of honouring and respecting traditional craftsmanship.

Taking these home in a couple of hours. 7,50 euros a bottle (75cl).

It took a while, but I have pics for you. The cold beef salad is by far my favorite item. They are open very late, maybe 24 hours, and were the only shop open last night when we left our friends’ place. Not just the beef salad, but most of the small plates are good although very expensive (relatively). The eggplant is also great. I didn’t see anyone other than us eating bittermelon the whole month I stayed in Beijing. Someone has to if they keep making it.

Edit: I just realized I forgot to take a pic of the bittermelon small plate.

Only sort of! I really would love that machine. Counter space is an issue, though!

We were walking around aimlessly after dinner in Shanghai and came across a bakery called Lillian. They were bringing out a batch of fresh Portuguese egg tarts. Yum!

I don’t know anything about the craft beer scene, but it seems to me that something else is involved in the Momofuku Ko business, i.e., a mix of pretensiousness, bombast, and pomposity. I also looked at the prices of the wines on their list. There were a couple of bottles for $80, but loads of bottles for $795, $8000, $9000, even $12000, if I recall correctly. A list like that is not made for wine lovers; it’s for wine snobs and wealthy parvenus. I would be willing to bet their prices are so high because they do not want people to order these beverages. That way they can pride themselves with having them on the list without having to worry about keeping them in stock.

Behold, the cheesesteak-BLT

The pic doesn’t do it justice. That one was a winner.

Another poker game tonight. Not sure if our host, who is a fantastic cook, will provide anything. Here’s hoping '-)

Seared scallops with pappardelle in a Pecorino cream sauce with fresh corn, basil, and sage. Garden tomatoes with balsamic.

The babe loved the scallops!

Keep in mind Momofuku Ko is the most expensive of his restaurants and generally its a 300% markup in manhattan for alcohol- not saying it’s ok just that “everyone else is doing it”

Gorgeous tomatoes- Your babe has good taste!

Green on green here, plus corn. There’s some tofu in the bottom, lots of corn right off the cob, cucumber, scallions, these delightful garlic stuffed olives (!) and some peppery seasoning. Added some basalmic vinegrette after the photo. My kombucha bottle went crazy!! Erupted in bubbles! Thankfully i know better and open the bottle over the sink… the rest of the very bubbly booch a la carte.

And in the category of “It Tasted Better Than It Looks, I Swear,” was my potato salad made with the last bit of “fake” garlicky aioli (aka, doctored up mayo), cherry toms, and hard boiled egg. BLATs were on TJ’s lightly toasted Pane Rustico. Used cottage bacon, which feels somehow like it’s not really bacon, but it’s really yummy.
