Is it similar to silpancho?
exactly!
Ah, OK. I have heard of silpancho but not apanado. Maybe the names are regional.
we used them interchangeably growing up. Apanado just means breaded. And Silpancho seems to refer to the whole dish - the breaded/fried meat, the rice/fried potatoes, and usually a fried egg. It’s a carby wonderland!! When I was in Cochabamba, Bolivia a few years ago, we went to the purported King of Silpanchos restaurant. Such simple fare, but so good.
Well, I pre-seared and post-seared, cooked the beasts at 130 F for a little over an hour, poured the jus from the bags into the sauce. It was probably the best result I ever achieved. Looked nice, too. But not like yours.
Gooooood! Mine looks slightly different every time. You can’t really control the looks but you can control the tenderness and taste.
One of the guests told us that she had never liked duck before, but today’s was very good.
The size of the meat is comparable to Viennese Schnitzel… the plate. Simple can be good, sometimes is best.
I didn’t know that was possible… seems everyone likes duck. The deglazed sauce and wine (to drink alongside) really enhance the duck. At least for me.
Got here this afternoon and am staying for only a couple of days. Just for the beers this time, meeting up with a Korean beer fan I met in Seoul in January… Even though I come here once a year or so to fly out but the last time I was really staying as a tourist was some years back.
Going to Cantillon brewery straight from the station.
Brussels is run-down and filthy. The area between my lodging and Cantillon brewery seems like the entire African continent, and mostly men hanging round.
Rental bikes.
Metro ticket machine. A combination of touch screen and manual operation. You have to turn the round dial forcefully, once I figured it out.
The sun was approaching the horizon, we had to grab something at this market to eat before the food stalls closed. I chose Moroccan.
Filling of the Moroccan crepe. Dough is thick and chewy.
.
Dough before being filled.
Crepe Maroc was what I ordered, minus the honey.
Stall runs by 2 men.
It’s hot and crowded everywhere. What I saw as I emerged from the dark metro after having been to the pub. It’s summertime and the living is easy. Worries are for tomorrow. Let’s enjoy this sunset now.
Brussels has a tiny statue of a boy peeing, this is a drawing of that but instead of the boy it’s a dog. If you are going to vandalise then do it like the Belgians… make it art.
I got beer, 3 big bottles of Cantillon, but forgot to bring my Swiss army knife! So no beer tonight.
One more photo. It’s a very small weekly market with a few food and drink stalls besides typical meat/cheese/fruit/veg stalls. It was already full of people sitting at tables when we got there but by the time we walked past it again on the way back from the pub (which is only a block away) it was absolutely heaving with people. Seems there are a lot of hipsters of all ages at this market. Belgians are bon vivants, monday nights are as good as any night to go out drinking and eating.
Waffle stall.
Several dinners from some grilled chicken
Chicken with roasted kohlrabi, chopped crispy chicken skin and crystallized ginger. The skin and ginger were surprisingly good mixed together
Scallops and grits
Shredded BBQ chicken with leaf and beet salad
Hmm…how to respond…
My mouth watered at those scallop grits.
I’ve been thinking about a response also. I’m assuming it wasn’t meant to be, but to me it came across as an offensive generalization.
I try to assume the best intentions but, wow, what a loaded offhand comment, right?
I’m just gonna leave this right here: https://youtu.be/mAo-xxU9qF8
I love the pretzel goldfish! I buy them for my 4 year old but eat them myself!
That was my initial thought too. But I am hoping I am wrong.
I “discovered” them on my last trip to CA, i was poking around my sister’s cupboards and she buys them for my nephew! I’ve been smitten ever since.
I had a big smoothie late this afternoon (my favorite spinach/frozen blueberries/almond butter/almond milk combo) so decided watermelon for dinner sounded fantastic.
Wanted it more savory and added in a few olives and some chopped vidallia onion, some grinds of mixed peppercorns seasoning too. Sounds odd but was really tasty! More super bubbly kombucha a la carte
Bonus photo of mom’s jam! Haha, she makes lots of jam every summer- a good friend has apricot trees that go crazy so she makes dad’s favorite apricot pineapple. Next weekend is ollaliberry jam making from fruit another friend has in their backyard (ollaliberry is my most favorite!) she was very excited about the sticker labels which are new
Pork and Orzo stew i made yesterday, inspired by a member of a FB food group’s mother’s recipe. I threw in chopped collard greens and mushrooms because I had them. Made the rookie mistake of letting the orzo sit in the pork broth (you boil the pork in water for 30-60 minutes before putting it in the oven with the orzo and other ingredients.) and the orzo sucked it all up. Still a very homey, tasty dish. I never make orzo and that ends today. Salad on the side.
