What's for Dinner #129 - the Bridge to Summer Edition - May 2026

Thanks. When I tried just rice flour, the coating tasted like rice cakes, and not in an entirely good way. I’m currently mixing 20% rice and 80% potato. I might try cornstarch.

Timing on getting my AC system checked and cleaned on Friday was advantageous. Turned on the A/C today since it hit 86° in my area. Just enough to take the edge off.

I try to have my dad’s satay when hot weather hits. But instead of cooking on the grill pan, I sautéed the chicken, onions, red bell pepper, and sugar snap peas, and added his satay sauce and udon noodles. Chopped peanuts on top.

There was wine.

Interesting. The commercial mix also contains corn starch. Making a note….

Birthday dinner! People think I’m weird, but I know many of you understand the joy of making your own birthday dinner, not just for the enjoyment of the process but also knowing it will be as I really like it!

Ribeyes on the grill (PIC’s role in the dinner) with creamed spinach and potatoes first boiled then dried out on the stove top and then oven roasted with tallow. To start, wedge salad with thick cut bacon and surprisingly sweet tomatoes, blue cheese dressing. I realized as I took out the lettuce from the fridge that the grocery delivery place gave me cabbage! But I was able to run out and back in just 10 minutes My mom brought a delicious red wine and garlic bread to go along.

To finish I made lava cakes but several things came up over the day and particularly had to go out for an hour before dinner for a school thing, so in the confusion I forgot..flour. When I turned out the perfect looking cakes they kind of splatted out. Luckily i was using a parchment lined cookie sheet to turn them out on, so I put it back in the oven to bake up a bit and then served delicious “chocolate mess” with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream.

I forgot to plate and photo properly but everyone really enjoyed this meal and I felt suitably celebrated!

I was not in the mood to make dinner, but I had thawed some lamb meatballs and my very kind neighbor had delivered fresh-cut asparagus so I did. Thoroughly enjoyed spiced lamb meatballs (RecipeTin Eats) and neighbor asparagus; dilled rice was under flavored due to too many shortcuts.

I hosted a spring potluck for my local Fb cooking group at my friend’s clubhouse today — likely the last one until August, since I’m leaving town in less than two weeks and nobody else seems capable of organizing these things.

Perhaps that’s why a larger group had signed up than usual, with a goodly number of n00bz and trusted regulars alike. But then we had 3 mysterious no-shows, two of whom — a local bartender & his 93 yr old mom (a fabulous baker) worried us in particular :worried: They always show up, so hopefully everything is ok :crossed_fingers:t2: The 3rd no-show was my former boss at the local NPR station eons ago, and she’s a flake :woman_shrugging:t2:

The food wasn’t as abundant as expected, but varied and tasty:

a gorgeous and delightful corn pudding/souffle,

a hearty pot of black eyed peas,

smoky and sssssspicy buffalo turkey dip with homemade fried focaccia,

Thai peanut black bean dip with chile crisp & naan,

a wonderfully light blueberry cheesecake,

and a mystery ice cream flavor we all had to guess, yet nobody could. Malty with a deep caramel flavor and just a hint of bitterness on the palate turned out to be….. Guinness ice cream! Fabulous!!!

My caponata was polished off entirely, so I was glad I left about a 1/3 of it at home for my gathering of gals mañana to celebrate yet another birthday

My plate of good eats.

We’re home earlier than expected. Don’t mind that at all

We enjoyed another outstanding dinner at Falcone, including whole branzino; short rib pappardelle: tuna carpaccio; fried ricotta with fig reduction and hot honey; and fried calamari (not pictured). It all went great with an excellent Malbec and Cabernet.

Veal Stew with Mushrooms, Hazelnut Gremolata and Creamy Polenta from essen & trinken cooking magazine - flavors were really great, only the polenta was a bit too soupy.

Cubed veal was braised with shallots, garlic, rosemary, dukkah, tomato paste, white wine and chestnuts in mushroom broth. Pan-seared beech/shimeji mushrooms were added at the end.

Creamy polenta made with water, cream and butter.

Everything was topped with hazelnut gremolata (roasted and ground hazelnuts, tarragon, garlic and lemon zest)
