What's For Dinner #126 - the Hearts, Flowers, Candy, But It's Cold and Snowy! Edition - February 2026

Leftoverpalooza. After doggie bags from two dinners and a brunch out, plus several homemade dinners, the fridge was bursting. I was chuffed that the kid chose pav bhaji for his scrounge.

A quiet day.
I wanted the salmon filet that I didn’t take out yesterday.
But I wanted a light meal.

Salmon on a salad with a Sesame-Ginger Dressing worked. Made this with everything she notes except avocado and edamame (didn’t have; didn’t want). Not bad. I do like the dressing for a quick meal.

There was wine.

Man oh man that was a long rehearsal today! Long, but fruitful! Both the bass and the sax/cl who are sitting in for the next two shows were an absolute joy to play with :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

We went until almost 7:30 pm, and that point I was def not in the mood to make dinner. My PIC had a hankering for Indian food, and so we ordered from one of the places downtown: butter chicken, their baingan bharta (it’s bangin’ I tellz ya) and an order of garlic chili naan for pickup — faster than delivery & cheaper.

Sadly, the restaurant called just as my PIC was leaving to let us know that they were out of baingan bharta :sob: Got saag paneer instead. Still tasty, especially augmented with plenty of chile powder. It’s Sssspicy Ssssunday after all, and these dishes are traditionally on the milder side.

Back to the kitchen tomorrow!!!

Old school chicken tacos from leftover roast chicken :chicken:. Pico de gallo with avocado. Sriracha mayo. Served myself four but could eat only three. DH to the rescue.

We enjoyed another sensational dinner at James on Main, in Hackettstown, NJ, including filet mignon with garlic butter; pan roasted cod loin; lamb loin; wood fired ginger glazed shrimp; beef carpaccio; yellow curry and forbidden rice; ahi tuna; crispy and creamy potato wedges. It all went great with an excellent Malbec and cabernet. The menu at the end gives more details.

Broke my alcohol abstinence today, so excuse my inebriation. Guess the movie.

High Society?

First time in a long time I made a traditional 3 part dinner (meat, starch, veg)
I love this lamb shoulder from Jamie Oliver’s “Jamie at Home”. I’ve made it before but not in a number of years. Slow cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic, mashed root vegetables, and sautéed black kale. The whole dinner is in the book, my only modification was to sauté the green in the lamb fat with a mushed garlic clove from the roast vs boiling and adding butter. Good thing I love this because I live alone so I’ll be eating it for a while . Went well with this Australian Cab from Parker Estate recommended by my PA State Store wine specialist (go figure if you are familiar with PA’s liquor system)

NYT Jalapeños-Orange Pork Tenderloin with Snap Peas. Odd combination of ingredients but it worked and I liked it. Ginger rice and chopped salad, little gem, red cabbage, red onion, red baby bell, cauliflower, broccoli, peppercorn ranch.

I haven’t a clue.

I had to “pivot” my dinner menu when I checked on the potatoes I had in stock; they needed to be used. I made a big pot of Potato Soup. There are some peas and ground up hot dogs in there, as well.

I served it with some shredded cheese and green onion on top.

I thought it was really tasty, but I was really hungry – no complaints from the ladies.

The spare ribs from a couple of days ago became pulled pork tacos, with avocado, tomato, and feta.

It’s always hard to find the right balance between visiting new restaurants and revisiting old places. Normally we tend to try out new ones but place on our trip to San Diego we wanted to revisit was Trust https://www.trustrestaurantsd.com It’s a New American shared small plates place with very high level of cooking and it really didn’t disappoint tonight. We also dislike ordering all dishes at the beginning of the night as restaurants in the US tend to rush too much to get you out the door but service was great and they spaced out the dishes perfectly so that we had a very relaxed night with outstanding food

Albacore Tartare, black sesame, cilantro, avocado, sprouts, cucumber, trout roe, taro root chips

Coal Roasted Carrots, pistachio butter, pickled jicama, cumin, pomegranate, salsa macha

Duroc Pork Belly, miso glaze, peanuts, kumquat marmalade, endive

Cant name the movie but this former road warrior knows the hotel franchise and room type, lol. That configuration is actually my favorite and I used to ask for that type because it “lives” better than mostnof the rest.

Yeah, my stay so far has been good. Especially since I’m not paying. The movie is a favorite of mine, Rear Window.

Fish-n-Chips imagined versus Fish-n-Chips actual:

My son’s first attempt. I tried to tell him a shallow pan wasn’t going to work well.

ETA - sent it to his oldest sister who replied:

Is it really college if you don’t start a fire in your kitchen?

I’ve been mad at Mallwart’s various bad practices for decades.

That said, I did check their websites within a certain radius and none had them in-store, delivery only. Maybe it’s because most of the local Hispanic population is North and Central American, rather than South America.
