What's For Dinner #126 - the Hearts, Flowers, Candy, But It's Cold and Snowy! Edition - February 2026

Pork Curry with Turmeric Rice and Pear-Pepper-Chutney from essen & trinken magazine - chunks of pork shoulder are braised with curry paste mixture (coriander, black pepper, cumin, fennel, shallots, garlic, ginger and lime zest), tomato paste and star anise in chicken broth. Towards the end sweet potatoes, corn cob and green beans are added. Finished with some Thai basil. Served with turmeric rice (basmati rice, coconut oil, turmeric, parsley) and a red bell pepper and pear chutney (roasted bell peppers, pear, ginger, sugar and apple cider vinegar cooked together)

How does one eat the chunks of COTC?

Cutting of the kernels with the knife

They were undeniably the MUCH better team this time around. But I’ll still relish the Malcolm Butler pick in 2015.

Fettuccine w/ clam sauce. some dressed cukes. we get these local clams often, i typically steam them and eat them directly after a butter dip. some clam pasta seemed more compelling today.

Brown plate alert! Pernil with black beans and rice from yesterday. My local Latin markets all have a hot bar, and I was in no mood to cook after teardown yesterday so picked up some dinner. Delicious pork. Rice is tasty but a little dry.

Even fit with the Superb Owl theme.

And so it finally begins. Day one of my “vacation” while the water damage is repaired. Grilled chicken salad from Jack’s.

Since I never got my smashburger fix Saturday at the brewery :sob:, more health food was in order @casa lingua tonight: cheeborgerz n fries. The usual TJ’s chuck / brisket / sirloin patties pan-fried MR, topped with Wegmans’ ultra sharp ‘murrcan cheez on Wegmans’ sesame seed Kaiser rolls. Shmear of Duke’s & Heinz for me, Heinz & mustard for him, shredded iceberg & thick-sliced red onion for both of us. I’d forgotten that we had to get rid of the Grillo’s pickles, so we had to do without. Sadz.

Kewpie and MOAR Heinz for dippin’ the crispy LW fries.

Think I forgot to post my dinner at sister’s Sat., night - first time trying an air fryer - well, not a typical one, it’s a Ninja toaster oven/air fryer, so it’s flat (meaning you can’t put anything super tall in it). Worked well on salmon filets that I marinated in white miso and sesame oil. Fish was super fatty, though, very rich. Alongside was short-grain rice with furikake and garlicky, slightly charred cabbage (sister doesn’t love a lot of real charring.)

I invited extra people to Superb Owl because I figured the cold would keep some away, but no! They all showed up! Luckily I always over prepare, and our friends bring too much stuff. I’ve already given the root beer (?) to the building maintenance crew.

Not pictured, because I suck, the beef on weck that H made with kimmelweck rolls his friend brought down special from Buffalo. A good time was had by all!

What was the dip with the crudités and the white one by the ruffles? They look extra thicc and tasty.

Dizengoff hummus on the crudite plate, regular ol’ onion dip (Lipton Golden Onion soup mix & TJ’s sour cream) by the chips.

One of our guests is a) Israeli and b) the world’s pickiest eater over the age of 5. She not only made a huge dent in the hummus, she took home the leftovers. I have succeeded in my endeavors.

Whole chickens were BOGO this week, so I bought two. We’ll nosh on roasted bird for a couple of days, and the rest will be shredded for the freezer. Chicken stock from the bones to be made later this week.

Marinated bean salad with celery and parsley – also enough for a few days.

Finally, a big and bubbly focaccia – deets here.

I love dips. I would’ve put a dent in them as well.
