What's For Dinner #120 - the Grilling Edition - July 2025

Helen’s Bolognese from “Comfort” by Ottolenghi - an interesting, spicy, very good “Asian” spin on bolognese, made with ground pork, onion, garlic, carrots, celery, ginger, star anise, cinnamon stick, bay leaves, sichuan peppercorns, fennel seeds, shaoxing wine, doubanjiang, light soy sauce, scallions, cornstarch, cilantro and sesame seeds. Served over fettuccine and with quickly “marinated” cucumbers (rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil)

What a great idea. It looks and sounds great.

@ChristinaM - thanks for doing the work to find the recipe.

Maybe 1/4 of a butter and lemon streamed Idaho trout, a few spoonfuls of NE rice pilaf and 1/2 of a steamed artichoke. Leftovers from last night and looking forward to them. A few Black Pearl cherries for dessert. They are the best cherries I’ve have tasted, :cherries:ever! The roomate has proven to be the care giver par excellence. Neither one of us expected to be in the roles of patient (me) or care giver (him) for this long. I am blessed.

I made pad prik king with fresh Makrut lime leaves, chicken breast, chicken of the woods mushrooms, haricots verts, and zucchini. Served over brown jasmine rice with sesame cucumber salad. I don’t think sesame is much used in Thai cuisine, but it was quick.

My turn to have an autumnal meal even though it’s still a little warm out. Pork chop, puréed butternut squash from last year from the freezer, broccoli from last week’s CSA from the fridge and a little butter over the veggies.

Grandkids are here tonight. Their favorite meal. Grilled out steaks and twice baked potatoes. I don’t tell anyone that I make TBP because it’s easier on me instead everyone fixing a baked potato with all the fixings at the last minute.
Now me - A little olive oil/balsamic reduction provolone, salami/pepperoni sandwich on good bread. I’m just not into steak and potatoes.

Burrata Caprese with local heirlooms and leftovers.

Stir-fried mung bean sprouts, the last air-fried Peruvian chicken thigh :sob: (wish we’d had more leftover to dip into that luscious aji verde ), melitsanosalata, my PIC’s meatballs, and the dolmades, which are even more decrepit than TJ’s & not half as good.

We finally had a sunny day. It’s been a wet July. Loaded up my pup and we headed to a lake nearby. Caught a couple small lake trout, so beer battered them when we got home. We fry outside and somehow we both thought the other person went inside to put the fries. Fish was done before fries went it, so fish went in to stay crispy. Overcooked fish and undercooked fries. Made some slaw with some stuff hanging out in the fridge. Still a good meal all around.

Aren’t we all too hot right now…

I wasn’t very hungry. I found a cooked chicken thigh in the freezer, it tasted like it had been cooked in soy sauce and ginger. I made a salad of red and green cabbage, carrot, celery, cucumber, the chopped chicken and cashews with a honey mustard dressing. There is a little carrot cake for dessert if the appetite returns.

A sausage and seafood ragout. Simmered browned minced sausage, tomato, red wine, and butter beans, heat off and shrimp and black cod added so as not to overcook, over cavatappi.

I’ll call tonight’s dinner Ugly Orange Fried Rice. I purchased some sweet potatoes, but it appears they were old. I didn’t want them going bad, so I cooked, mashed and added them to my fried rice.

This ugly orange fried rice consisted of a can of pink salmon, (the aforementioned) mashed sweet potatoes, onions, peas, corn and rice (of course). It tasted fine, but looked quite odd.

My son brought fixings and cooked me dinner tonight. A honey-soy glazed chicken he’s learned.

I helped by prepping broccoli and aromatics, but he cooked.

Proud mama here.

We sat and watched one of his fave TV shows and dessert was a berry strudel from Aldi with ice cream.
