What's For Dinner #120 - the Grilling Edition - July 2025

It’s rainy and I’m tired after going to Seattle for a couple nights. I’m trying to improve my baking skills, so made some onion buns for tuna melts. And the storm just started so the tomato soup was perfect, and it used up some stuff from the fridge.

Another steamer in Happy Valley, and so dinner was a simple, summery and light affair of Mediterranean mezzedes: I made horiatiki with Persian cukes, heirlooms, a green pepper I’d bought specifically for this purpose a week ago & that had gone a lil wrinkly (I don’t have much use for green pepper otherwise), red onion, and TJ’s delovely Greek feta, dressed only with Cretan olive oil, s&p & Greek oregano.

We’d scooted over to the Turkish market to grab a jar of their fab grilled eggplant, which I turned into probably one my tastiest renditions of melitsanosalata ever (Cretan olive oil, 1 sizable garlic clove, a splash of RWV, s&p, chopped parsley & little mint, walnuts, feta),

and spinach börek.

TJ’s gigantes in tomato sauce & dolmades not from TJ’s and. We def prefer TJ’s.

Toasted pita bread for soppin’ up the horiatiki juices and olive oil & for the melitsanosalata.

PS: I absolutely  my new personal trainer! She’s got a ton of ink on her legs, is short and strong, a canna-sseur like me…. and she even knows how to give a good massage (she noticed a knot on my shoulder and started working on it in between row sets)!!! I may finally stick to this one

Yikes! :grimacing:

Panko-crusted rockfish tacos, featuring a nice BC “Black Bomber” (sebastes melanops). Garden slaw. A chili-lime-ranch for dressing. So good! :yum:

Bought Rana cheese tortellini (I think for the first time??) after hearing how great they are, and BF made sauce made with TJs San Marzano tomatoes that were just past their peak (so beautifully sweet). i added more sauce at the table. Really good, nice & light dinner.

Shrimp salad. Little gem and red leaf lettuce, green onion, celery, radish, Golden Nugget cherry tomatoes form the garden, avocado, hbe. Mystery dressing from an unmarked jar in the fridge, lots of dill and garlic, very Greekish.

there was some white seabass down at the harbour this week. served with wild rice, shiitakes, over a soubise. a bit monochromatic, but not in flavour.

I was correct. On a coast-to-coast fight that departed four hours late, we got a cookie.

I think they actually sell those at the grocery where I live. Are they worth checking out, then?

Bean Sprouts either Mung or Soy make a great cold Salad as well there are both Korean and Japanese Versions spicy(by adding Korean Chili Flakes) or non. Thought you may like these especially for Summer. They store well too.

Busy wedge salad! I started putting stuff on it, and then I just kept going.

Do you still blanch or stir-fry them and serve cold, or do you eat them raw?
