Well, I somehow managed to catch a cold. In effin’ June. Yay.
I still dragged myself onto my Vespa to take my knife to a shop for sharpening. They said I could pick it up on the 30th, which is the day we’re moving out of our pad. Yeah, no. I was kinda hoping to use it while I still have access to a kitchen. Thankfully, one of our favorite weekly markets has a sharpening truck, so I’ll just take it over there next week.
I was also unsuccessful in tracking down a jeweler who could fix the bracelet that used to belong to my late mom, and which unfortunately tore recently It’s sterling silver, but most likely not very valuable. It is valuable to me, however, and I’ve worn it daily until it broke. The search continues.
Dinner was a BA choriatiki with those fab Sicilian tomatoes, and kalathaki instead of feta. It was all I could get down, but my PIC munched on some of the antipasti & cheeses we took home from yesterday’s humongous lunch.

Tonight I made Rou Zao Fan (Taiwanese braised ground pork) served over cauli-brown rice with a soft-boiled egg and sides of sesame cucumber ribbon salad (thanks @mariacarmen for the Kewpie dressing rec) and broccoli with chili crisp, black vinegar, and sweet soy sauce. Enjoyed it – now to clean the kitchen. Sigh. My DH came home from travel with COVID so it’s solo parenting for a few more days.
I successfully made my first spaghetti carbonara tonight (although I did need to sub bacon for guanciale, because I was doing this on the fly). I followed this recipe and video by Chef Frank Proto:
Sooo…it seems I have arthritis/osteoarthritis on the top of my right foot, possibly aggravated by my treadmilling for the past couple of months. Figures, try to get a bit healthier by regular daily walking and screw something else up.
So I’m waiting for a podiatrist referral and hoping an insert will help. I’m wearing New Balance sneakies all the time now, but maybe not enough support. Will see. This whole getting old thing sucks sometimes.
ANYWAY, dinner changed a bit after I got home, as an ingredient I was going to use was icky. I marinated a large b/s chicken breast in orange juice, roasted garlic, minced fresh rosemary and thyme, honey, and Dijon mustard for about an hour. Then reduced the marinade and spooned some over the chicken that had already been baking for about 20 minutes.
Roasted baby potatoes tossed with olive oil and Spicewalla’s Honey and Herb seasoning blend and steamed broccoli alongside.
My menu plan this week got rearranged so I’ve got two dishes left to make: a soba noodle salad and chicken asparagus stirfry. The sona noodle salad got kaiboshed since I’m missing most of the condiments so I guess I will have to go to Chinatown sooner rather than later. And the chicken is still in the freezer so I had udon noodles with a peanut sauce for dinner tonight. No pic this time because I’ve made it a million times. I do however have a picture of the alpenglow mocktail I’m enjoying though:
A nice BC King salmon, blackened with a rub we purchased on a recent trip to Salt Spring Island (needs salt, otherwise very good). Salad greens in a raspberry-rhubarb vinaigrette. For a fancy dessert: strawberry shortcake on freshly-baked cream biscuits with whipped cream.
The salmon we caught ourselves. Greens, raspberries, rhubarb, and strawbs all from the garden.
On a whim I bought a carton of Panera Lobster Bisque and lobster tails were also on sale. I thought bisque and lobster roll for dinner. The bisque, all I could taste was sherry. I simmered it for a long time and the strong sherry taste went away but then there was very little taste at all. I added tomato paste, smoked paprika, garlic and herb seasoning and a glob of butter. It helped a lot. Lobster roll was good. I sauteed in butter then added it to a little salad of mayo, celery, lemon juice and zest and dill.
Mines the top of my left foot. Had an MRI several yeaes ago, only to be handed a script for painkillers and a coupon for new shoes.
I take tart cherry juice with turmeric…either a liquid concentrate or a tablet…it’s best known for gout, but it stops the inflammation and pain. My beloved Hokas help too.
It’s been good, thanks for asking! Life has been unfortunately busy due to my FIL having a stroke and being a province away. He’s going home in a couple of week, so we are very grateful. Will be getting back to working (and posting) soon!
Orecchiette with Mexican Chorizo and Broccoli Rabe from “Anything’s Pastable” - broccoli rabe is first blanched, then chopped very small. You make garlic bread pangrattato by pan-roasting panko bread crumbs, fresh garlic and garlic powder. Sear and crumble mexican chorizo with garlic, lemon zest and chopped broccoli rabe, mix with orecchiette and pasta water and finish with feta and pangrattato
