Our final night in Ortigia. 's ok, I’m ready to be back in Berlin with more reasonable temps

A Neapolitan pizza place near us had great reviews and looked promising. The bruschetta at the neighboring table looked fab, but when I discovered stuffed & fried zucchini blossoms on the menu, my mind was made up — nor to mention that the idea of having roasted bread topped with tomatoes before a pizza seemed almost tautological

Unfortunately, the blossoms were delivered the second I left the table to freshen up, so they were room temp when I returned. No matter, really, bc the batter was too thick and overwhelmed the poor, delicate blossoms. I tried to scrape them out, but all you could taste was the ricotta filling. Meh.

We had a local unfiltered beer to go with, and split the Margherita 2.0 with bufflo mozz, San Marzano tomatoes, basil & olive oil.

It was a’ight. As I mentioned elsewhere, the food I’d greatly looked forward to on this trip fell a bit short, but we had a wonderful time anyway.

I was tickled to see how much folks here seem to be into fried seafood… really, fried anything, and very, very sweet stuff.

Bummed that we never had a chance to have a freshly filled chocolate pistachio cannolo with pistachio cream, but that is mos def not happening this AM

Next time!

Oh dear. That sounds so disappointing. I love fried zucchini blossoms. I still fondly remember the version I had at La Locanda del Sorrisi in Turin. Unfortunately that restaurant has closed down :disappointed:

It was so light and delicious - filled with a whipped goats cheese.

Hope you have a safe journey back to Berlin.

Home sweet home. Berlin greeted us with 16˚C, gray skies & rain. At least we missed the torrent currently coming down, as we are safely situated in our living room.

I ordered biang biang noodz with beef and a Sichuan fried chicken bao from our favorite purveyor for delivery while we were still on the bus home from the airport. Picked up a coupla Helle from the Späti to drink with, and my PIC made us martinis with a Berlin gin for afters. Cloudy for a gin, heavy on the herbals, could use the orange bitters my dude usually adds. Might hafta dig into the pistachio liqueur & croccanti we brought back later

Tonight I made Aztec chicken, quinoa, and avocado soup* from The Skinnytaste Cookbook. This seems to be a twist on chicken tortilla soup using quinoa in place of the tortilla strips. I added green beans and zucchini as well as some chipotle en adobo, Goya sazón with cilantro and achiote, and Better than Bullion to up the flavor. Tasty, if a bit hot for a June dinner.

May here practically flew by, and the next 3 weeks are bound to, as well!

We’ll make the most of it

ANOTHER not-pretty-but-pretty-tasty dinner, courtesy of the BF. i bought Hoda Soy miso-marinated tofu and crumbled it up for my salad. upon tasting some and not discerning any miso flavor, I salted them and the BF tossed them in hot sesame oil. Together with the Japanese sesame dressing and the rest of the salad they were good, but i don’t need to buy them again, when regular non-marinated tofu will do.
