What's For Dinner #117 - Time to Dig in the Dirt! Edition - April 2025

I took an online drawing class during the pandemic, and an in-person one last year. I got a lot better over the course of it! (And I also have a nice drawing of a pear.)

Drawing can be fantastic for body and mind, I have found. It’s about the process just as much as it is about what you create. I’m reconnecting with it myself after too many years. Go for it!

The friend I recently reconnected with is also taking a drawing class. She posted a picture of a drawing of a rabbit, and it was so good I thought it was the instructor’s example!

@tomatotomato @linguafood I figured drawing would be good for the mind - I do crosswords to exercise my brain and journaling as a form of therapy so I was thinking drawing would combine the two. But that’s just my take on things  The course I’m taking is eight weeks and I have no plans on going further and no plans on being the next Picasso since I’m just taking the classes for me. The instructor was showing us a small sketchbook she carries around with her and I am thinking of investing in one. During the summer I like sitting in a park reading and I think taking a small sketch pad would be neat since I can illustrate what I see while I’m there. And the venue where the class is held has a farmers market on Sunday mornings which I am hoping to frequent when the weather gets warmer. There are lots of benches to sit on so it would be neat just sitting there watching people go about their business on market day and I can sketch what I see.

Creating art is great for mind & spirit! I used to draw a lot as kid (I mean… who didn’t?), but mostly horses :grimacing:

You and my friend might inspire me to take it up again. Beats farting around online

You can draw AND fart around online! We would miss you (well I would anyway ) if you ever left HO for drawing.

Aw. That’s such a sweet thing to say :upside_down_face:

I fear that my online habit won’t be going anywhere any time soon, lest I find full-time employment. No doubt any employer would have a stern word with me if I spent 8 hours on HO every day

But I could def use a good reason to be offline more, and you have inspired me to check local course offerings! Thank you for that :pray:t2:

Yay!

Awww. I’m just trying to expand my horizons and I’m glad I inspired you to get back into drawing.

Fantastic first visit to Liholiho Yacht Club https://lycsf.com/ in the Nob Hill part of SF. New American with heavy influences from Hawaii and parts of Asia which creates some unique flavor profiles one doesn’t see in many other restaurants. We picked our preferred way of the chef picking the dishes for us to give a good overview of the menu. Good service (the only small nitpick would be that if you serve courses in larger rounds, it would be better to serve the final hot courses in smaller rounds so that they don’t get cold too fast) and a great night (so good that we even forgot to take picture of tasty tripe salad)

Tuna poke, nori cracker, sesame tamari, spicy aioli

Duck liver mousse, banana bread, meiwa kumquat, 5-spice

Pickled pineapple taro puff

Kanpachi sashimi, macademia nut salsa macha, coconut, grape, daikon

Gulf shrimp, longansia, forbidden rice, satsuma, cucumber salsa, chile crisp

Crispy tripe salad, roasted peanuts, fish cake, kohlrabi, red cabbage

Scallion rice noodles, tokyo turnip, spigarello, sesame tofu, trumpet mushrooms

Swordfish katsu, carrot japanese curry, pickled ginger, caper-bonito spread, crispy quinoa

American wagyu zabuton, japanese sweet potatoes, horseradish, chrysanthemum chimichurri

Baked hawaii, orange chiffon cake, coconut pog sorbet

Macademia nut cookie, white chocolate ganache

@honkman that whole meal looks fabulous but the chiffon cake is a work of art. Did it taste as good as it looks?

Yes, it was really a great dinner and the baked hawaiian with the pog sorbet was a great finish

Wow, that looks like an incredible meal! The kanpachi, shrimp & wagyu dishes in particular speak to me.

Did the meiwa kumquat provide a tart counterpoint to all the other sweet components?

Yes, it was nicely tart but even the banana bread wasn’t overly sweet but brought more a nice banana flavor which worked well with the duck liver.

And it is, in today’s expensive restaurant world, “relatively” affordable with $85/pp

It’s really good. We decided to eat the rest of it tonight instead of making another soup.

That’s nothing given the amount of food. And for SF at that.

A pear of what? Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I’m tighter than a bull’s arse in fly time, but I’d shell out $85 for that.
