Worked out nicely! Thank you @Amandarama ! I was able to lift the filets and leave most of the bones.
I got some of their beef short ribs at an indoor winter market held in my town…very good!
Do you mean Peppadews? I’d heard they were sweet(ish) as well, but couldn’t find them on last week’s shop. Will continue to keep an eye out.
Got milk?
Albondigas soup. Onion, garlic, carrots, cabbage, oregano, chicken broth, RO*TEL, sazon, cilantro. Served with serrano chile, more cilantro, tortilla chips and avocado. Maybe a Kahlua and cream for dessert.
We enjoyed another excellent charcuterie dinner tonight. Mrs. P prepared various combinations using capicola, coppa, prosciutto, cranberry blue cheese, Andouille sausage, Humboldt fog cheese, onion, balsamic cheese, fig jam, caramelized onion jam, peppadews, pine nuts, spicy tangerine and Calabrian chili olives, homemade guacamole and duck leg confit mac n cheese (not pictured). One of my favorite combinations was a slice of Andouille sausage topped with cranberry blue cheese. It all went great with an espresso martini and excellent cabernet.

I was invited by friends to the family party for their daughter’s 30th birthday. One parent is Bangladeshi, and the theme was a Pitha Party – specialty, mostly sweet, stuffed goodies – “dumplings” and crepes.
I had tried these from a street cart in Jackson Heights a while back with @DaveCook and @JenKalb (here and here), but what was served at the party was a much more extensive selection, and homemade.
They were sauteed, fried, or steamed, and stuffed or unstuffed. Made of various grain flours and lentils, stuffed with coconut or milk products. The one savory option came plain or with minced vegetables mixed into the batter, and was served with 3-4 accompaniments (chutneys and bhortas, one very interesting one made with dried and fried fish).
There was other (savory) food for those who were not Pitha enthusiasts – a rich chicken curry that I was told is called Bangladeshi wedding chicken “roast” (Biye Barir Roast), mutton (goat) kababs, whole tandoori chicken, white chicken kababs, Bengali chana dal (Chholar dal) and puris (Luchi) and festival-style mixed vegetables (Labra).
PITHAS:
Tonight I made a salmon ramen and despite its appearance it was very tasty. The only mistake I made was grating the carrot on too small a hole on my box grater. The only thing I would change next time would be to pick different veggies to make it look visually more appealing - maybe bok choy and shiitakes or water chestnuts for example.

White Bean Stew with Eggplants - from our favorite German cooking magazine. Using Rancho Gordo Royal Corona beans, you cook them with rosemary and bay leaves. In another pot you cook rutabaga, onions, juniper berries, tomato paste and garlic in white wine, vegetable broth and bean broth before adding eggplants (which were sautéed until slightly caramelized and mixed with crushed fennel, cardamom and coriander seeds), cooked beans, celery and pearl couscous. Finished with diced dried tomatoes and parsley and served with buffalo mozzarella
Do any of your local grocers have an olive bar? The ones around here usually have peppadews on them. Using the olive bar, or salad bars for that matter, is a great way to buy just a bit of something for a recipe that you’re unlikely to use for anything else. The price per pound may be a lot more but 6 peppadews don’t weigh that much.
Awesome! I’m so glad you enjoyed this!
What. A. Party. Dumplings and dumpling adjacent foods bring such a celebratory vibe. Thank you for spreading the happiness.
What a sensational spread! They must have been cooking for weeks!! Amazing.
They weren’t THAT bad that I needed to cool down my mouth/throat. Just more forward heat than I’m used to. It died down somewhat quickly, so it wasn’t mouth-burning. Just not my cuppa tea. I know there are heat-heads on HO; I’m definitely not one of them. LOL
Ohhh, that’s a good idea - yeah, I think Hannaford has one. Will check nice time I’m in there! Thanks!
Sorry, yes, peppadews- autocorrect that I didn’t catch
Incredible! What a feast to celebrate 30 trips around the sun!
