Went out for dinner with some friends(ex work mates) despite the frigid temperatures, -20 C.
Koh Lipe Thai Kitchen has 1 Michelin star, and boy oh boy was it jumpin’. Packed to that rafters at 5:30pm and a line up as we left a couple hours later.
We shared and appetizer, no photo, and I ordered Pad Ka Na, Chinese broccoli with garlic, onion and chilli. Delicious and the potion was huge with tons of crispy pork belly, came with a side of rice. I asked for med heat level and it was perfect. Not sure how “authentic” this dish is, but I’d order it again. Only complaint was the noise level, waaayyyy too loud for this geezer, had to yell at my dining companions to have a conversation  . Michelin star worthy? Not sure, but it’s sure good for business.

*uploaded a photo of the app we shared, Goong Moun.

Fried crispy skin tofu rolled with shrimp, carrot, chilli, betel leaf and served with Arjard sauce. Very good.

OK, reading this…my eyes saw “sex work mates” and I thought “well, THAT took a turn!” (And don’t you DARE CHANGE IT, @PedroPero! )

My favorite way to eat Japanese curry is with pork katsu

Agree. Though also my only way :joy:

(I soon learned to ask for the Katsu on the side, though, so it didn’t suffer the usual fate of crisp fried item that is then sogged by sauce.)

Yum

Really good, I’d go back if I could sit on the patio. Too old for that noise. :man_facepalming:

I’ll be getting take-out. LOL

Average price for an entree is around $25, but it should travel well. You wouldn’t even sit on the patio?

I do patios when it’s above 12 degrees C. I might want take-out before late April.

I get $25 main course take-out, and other fancier take-out, since I do take-out all winter long.

Ya, last night was a bit too chilly to use their patio

I usually scarf food in my car when it’s below minus 10, but Thai food could get messy.
I’m guessing you visited the Scarborough location.

I think Koh Lipe also has a location on Baldwin that is a 15 minute walk for me.

We were at the Baldwin location, more convenient for my friends and I. Might check out the Scarborough location with the fam next time.

I’m surprised. The prices are pretty much the same as most of the other Thai restaurants downtown that I’ve visited over the past 3 years.

I live close to 2 that aren’t great, that have similar prices, and I think Nana, which is very casual (too casual and loud for me but I get take-out so it doesn’t matter) , and also a 15 minute walk for me, is around the same price.

I didn’t pick the restaurant, my ex chef did.

Kimchi is excellent in a grilled cheese too! And as I’m researching a Vegas trip, I was reminded of Roy Choi’s place Best Friend, and he has kimchi carbonara on the menu.

i also made some other pasta kimchi thing, can’t remember whose recipe…
there’s just about nothing that kimchi won’t make better!

Oh yes! Kimchi and any kind of fermented veg is great in panini. A family favorite.
