What's For Dinner #114 - the 1st Quarter Century Edition - January 2025

I think I’ve made hard shell tacos for myself once in my life…some time in the 1980s, with a box of Old El Paso hard shell tacos shells. Never did end up using the rest of those shells. :woman_shrugging:

This time, I went with soft tortillas using ground pork, mostly following this recipe. Cut the recipe down to about 1/3 for 2 tacos tonight; another for lunch tomorrow.

The toppings were shredded Monterey Jack, diced cucumber and tomato, pickled red onion, and a lime crema. It was very good!

There was wine.

We enjoyed another stellar dinner at Cafe Panache, in Ramsey, NJ, including a sensational foie gras mousse with pecan, honey, blue cheese, baked pear, crispy duck cracklins, and pickled cabbage; octopus with eggplant caponata; panko crusted halibut with forbidden rice, seaweed, and a creamy wasabi sauce; pan roasted venison loin with wild mushrooms, spaetzle, and juniper berry sauce; lobster bisque with PEI mussels; mushroom and ricotta ravioli. It all went great with an excellent cabernet and red blend.

Baked rainbow trout stuffed with minced shrimp, salmon and mushrooms, chopped black olives, and pearl couscous. Thyme, garlic, black pepper, evoo, meyer lemon. Some grains of the couscous fell out and browned while baking, adding toasty flavors.

In the pan (lighting was terrible, sorry):

And plated:

Our turn to host poker last night

Our buddy had safely returned from his Taiwan trip Friday afternoon & was up for a game. In fact, considering his jet-lag he seemed to be the most awake of our guests — one had spent the afternoon “cleaning the house & drinking” and therefore started fading as early as 8:30pm , another had also likely pre-gamed and once they hit the weed it was fast train to snooze town  . And so, our game that used to go well into the wee hours of the morning usually ends well before midnight these days, as it did yesterday :expressionless:.

Perhaps we should schedule a noon game next time to catch everyone still sober / awake.

As for sustenance, I’d made a YUGE pot of Tuscan soup that came out really well: bc I finally had them in the pantry again, I started the Tuscan soup with melting a few anchovies in olive oil before adding the toasted fennel seeds, TPSTOG, tomato paste & spicy Turkish red pepper paste.

The house smelled fab all afternoon, and I’m glad I made about a gallon, so we have leftovers & enough to share with my elderly neighbor, too

So many of Eating Well’s recipes are very bland to my taste buds.

I am hoping someone will do me a favor and place a link to the NYT recipe links thread for me. I was on it a few moments ago and accidentally closed it and can’t find it now. Really strange. Or maybe I’m very tired. Regardless, it will be much appreciated.

A fried chicken sandwich from P J Clucks in Toronto. It includes slaw, pickles, and hot sauce. I had the Ranch dressing left off. I added some honey. The chicken was pretty good. 7/10 for me, maybe? My friend loves this sandwich. That’s why I tried it today.

I probably would leave off the hot sauce and not add the honey if I order it again. I debated adding this to the Toronto board and decided, nah, just a small post here on WFD.

BISO chicken thighs in a Greek marinade: olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, dried oregano, and s/p. Roasted in a 400° oven until done, basting a couple of times.

Steamed green beans and wine alongside.

Chocolate Chip Pistachio Banana Bread for dessert, although the center seems to have collapsed a bit and might not be cooked enough, even though the tester came out clean. Will see once I cut in to it.

And Finny hollering at me from the back of the couch until I covered him with my lap blankie. Big baby.

Slow start befitting of a Sunday

A friend recently self-published a book about growing up in Soviet Russia, Beyond the Birch Trees, and today the brewery where she moonlights & my band occasionally performs hosted an afternoon book party that included her reading two stories, followed by a signing and live music — the latter of which we sadly had to miss due to other important errands before the semester starts up. Her adult kids even flew in from LA for the weekend just for this occasion! I told her she can sign my copy next time we get together, and I look forward to reading it

While doing dishes later in the day, a pair of scissors slipped out of my hand and fell blades first on and RIGHT THRU the lid of one of my favorite small pots, shattering the glass :scream: The shards were contained to the pot, but I guess I’ll have to find a new lid that fits, or a new pot :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Dinner was a low-key affair of Tuscan soup & MOAR of that Belgian endive salad w/mandarins I love.

I’ll take an order of the chicken dinner and the kitty, please, and thank you. I’m off desserts for a while, otherwise would order that, too.

I’m inclined to let you have Murphy, who just let a Silent But Deadly rip while sitting at my left shoulder on the back of the couch. I had to get up and wave it away with a pillow. Sheesh!
