What's For Dinner #110 - the Earth, Wind & Fire Edition - September 2024

Oven-baked Piri Piri chicken, potato salad with pickles and dill, roasted potatoes, corn on the cob, coconut curry apricot baked beans.

Baklava from Greektown for the dining companions. I’m on Day 1 of cutting back on sugar and crap again.

Cats in baskets. Cats in boxes. Never a cat in a cat carrier on their own. Must be the pleasure association. Your’s is soooo sweet.

I’m going to make a lower sodium Mississippi Roast tomorrow, using a ~3 lb hunk of blade chuck roast, 1/4 cup butter , half a packet of Ranch powder, half a packet of Demi Glace powder and 3 pepperoncini, to see if that salt level works for our fairly low sodium palates here. I bought the Brown Gravy packet as well, but I think I’ll sub Demi Glace powder for Au Jus powder.

Another salad day. Asian style, red cabbage, carrot, cucumber, green onion, cilantro, mint, nước chấm dressing. Topped with pork tenderloin roasted in gochujang spicy miso sauce and chopped peanuts. There a Beefeater martini rocks.

Burritos. Kind of a production. Carnitas, roasted zukes and mushrooms, tomatillo salsa, two kinds of rice, refried black beans, watermelon with tajin. No pic. By the time we finished cooking, I needed to head to a rehearsal.

Our second visit to Mezzaluna Pasteria https://www.mezzalunapasteria.com/ in Pacific Grove was as good as the first one. The dishes might not be the most innovative ones but with all pasta, mozzarella and gelato made in-house here you will get excellent Italian inspired dished in a relaxed yet lively ambience. It’s no surprise that even on a Sunday night every table was occupied.

Bread with tapenade

Salumi - italian charcuterie, chef’s whole grain mustard, roasted peppers, marinated olives, house-made crostini

Tre mozzarelle - fiori di latte mozzarella, buffalo mozzarella, burrata, roasted bell peppers, marinated olives, pickled cauliflower, house-made crostini

Spaghetti alla carbonara - house cured pancetta, farm duck egg yolk, parsley, parmesan

Lasagna di pollo - chicken sausage, tomato, mushroom, parmesan, tomato cream sauce

Gelato with whipped cream - honey lavender, nutella, luxardo maraschino cherry

I dunno why, but I cringe every time I see gelato with whipped cream.

Isn’t that a classic combination for you ?

No, I hate whipped cream.

Since you also don’t like butter - it seems you don’t like high fat milk products in general, e.g. creme fraiche etc ?

Not really.

I like super premium and premium ice cream, which is high in butter fat.

And I love condensed milk, especially on shaved ice.

I’m with @ipsedixit on this one - why ruin lovely gelato with whipped cream? Which I also don’t like. I also don’t like heavy cream. I like butter though

I like cream in things but not just whipped. I would, however, left unsupervised, nibble on a good stick of butter. As to putting cream in things, I use Mexican crema lot, saving half the calories, but there is definitely a difference.

That’s the first restaurant carbonara I’ve seen that resembles my own, lots of eggy, cheesy sauce.
