What's For Dinner #108 - the Start to the Second Half of the Year Edition - July 2024

An easy chicken satay from Washington Post - chicken kebabs on the grill in a spicy peanut sauce. Served with charred scallions, cukes in an Asian-inspired vinaigrette, and steamed rice. Sriracha and chili crisp on the side.

Nowadays we often do… mostly due to his ongoing dental issues, but also because of my (sort of) ongoing low cholesterol efforts. So it’s been going on for about a year. we both wish it were different.

BF made me a giant salad, with a special addition of hearts of palm tonight. and I quickly took a pic of his pork fried rice before he could protest.

Eggplants with hummus, crispy chickpeas and salad. A few different components - Halved eggplants were roasted in the oven with a mixture of parsley, garlic, cumin seeds and olive oil. Hummus made from chickpeas, tahini, garlic, olive oil, ground cumin and lemon juice. Chickpeas were sautéed until crispy. Mixed greens salad with cherry tomatoes (the planned purslane was unfortunately nowhere near available) with a dressing made from olive oil, apple cider vinegar, lemon zest and juice, ginger and sugar

I always laugh out loud when I see Onions’ painstakingly arranged food photos with their probably exasperated dining companions’ arms/hunched bodies/hands going in for the kill in the background.

What now? Air Fryer artichoke? I just searched NYT but don’t find it; is the recipe from a book?

I adore artichokes. As a kid, a friend of my mom’s grew them and a fresh artichoke right off the bush…amazing. I virtually always just steam them and dip into a sauce of some sort but up for trying something new.

I had my first whole steamed artichoke with a zesty vinaigrette for dippin’ at the American Embassy Club. Adore them. What a great, light appetizer.

As this is “grinding seafood into mush” week chez small_h, I made shrimp quenelles in a tomato rosemary beurre blanc sauce. They don’t have that nice football shape, probably because I overdid it a little on the cream, but they came out pretty good! Seen here with a steamed artichoke, 'cause I had a leftover egg yolk, and what the hell else are you gonna do with a leftover egg yolk except make hollandaise?

How very apropos! The 'choke, I mean

Yes, and this time I did not actually steal anyone’s idea. TJ’s had nice big artichokes yesterday.

Did you form them with two Spoons or was your Farce too soft for that?

Super Frenchy Supper!

I tried! But they had very little structural integrity. They’re basically shrimp kreplach, which is sort of hilarious.

Yeah, between that and my recent asperges tonnato, I have no idea what’s come over me.

Grilled, Lemony, garlicky pork on a stick with salad and tzatziki. No feta in da house so Parm/Regg was substituted.

Pre dinner Negroni on the deck

Yes, it’s from Dinner in an Instant. Trim, rub cut surfaces with lemon, sprinkle with salt and cook at high pressure on a rack with 1 c water and a smashed garlic clove for 10 min (or 15 for very large). Serve with garlicky mayo.

gasp I, too am having a pre-dinner Negroni! But not on the deck, at my desk, just one letter off.

I scarfed down these chicken tinga tostadas with refries…not sorry. Cooling the chipotle sauce fire with some cheap TJ’s rosé.
