What's for Dinner #107 - the Almost Sum-Sum-Summertime Edition - June 2024

As they say better late than never –

Southeast Asian food crawl for Father’s day. The Sprout saw a TikTok about a Southeast Asian market in Philadelphia and thought it would be something fun to do for Father’s Day. Luckily Mr Bean agreed.

The market is located in FDR Park, across from the sports complex, in what I think of as the real South Philly. We did a quick walkthrough to get a sense of what is available and then backtracked and started eating. Many of the vendor booths had similar menus so when there was a choice between them we typically went to the ones with the longest lines. That gave us the opportunity to ask others what they recommend. We had some great food and would definitely go back.

Everything looks so good! Can’t wait to visit the market when I’m in Philly for the fall :drooling_face:

Same. There’s a joint here that served really good grouper tacos, but I’m not so sure they haven’t substituted of late. Bummer.

I miss that brewery and beer!

I made chicken-spinach-artichoke burgers with some TJ’s lemon pesto stirred in. Poppy seed and pepita slaw with dried cranberries as the side. Everyone dug in.

The last of the scallion-roasted chicken turned into old school tacos. Red rice recipe from Bar Ama. Homemade refries from garden shelling beans. Pico de gallo with added avocado. Salad greens also from the garden.

I was tired after a long week.
But I had said I’d go to Dali with a friend.
My place of sunshine and happiness didn’t fail to cheer me up.

Sangria, garlic shrimp, ham and cheese croquettes with tomato jam (the jam was SO good!), and baby lamb chops with peach sauce.

Dessert was churros with dulce de leche and chocolate sauces. And Cuarenta y Tres, of course!

I am so glad I went. Just what was needed before next week.

Salisbury steak from the freezer burger, vedalia onion, ketchup on a toasted bun that I thought was onion but turned out to be cheese, jalapeno. I should read labels. Garlicky parm fries, pickles and olives. Uno cervesa.

Has anyone seen @Miss_belle around lately?

Malvani chicken (with toasted coconut) and okra pictured.

Not pictured: dal, rice, millet rotis, carrot cake.

A school friend came over after many years. She was shocked that I made the millet rotis (she has a bunch of dietary restrictions and this was the carb she requested) because “normally people make them so dry they’re like crackers”. I told her I had a year of practice during the pandemic when there was an arbitrary gluten ban on my nephews who looove chapatis

Linguine with halibut and zucchini - first you make a tomato sauce with caramelized onions, garlic, carrots, tomatoes and thyme. Then you mix it with sautéed zucchini, red onion, white wine and diced halibut and gently cook it for about 10 minutes. Finish by mixing with linguine and parsley.

Ugh, why?!

Dinner at the pretty beer garden near us with a buddy. My PIC and I shared a good caponata,

nice asparagus soup with totally unnecessary croutons,

and a pizza “Diavola” that was mostly unnecessary as well. We ate it, tho.

Walked past a Sicilian gelato place with a line out the door, so decided to give it a try. We shared hazelnut, bacio Siciliano & pistachio.

Huge portion, but overall underwhelming (too creamy, too sweet, too lacking in flavor).

Sous-vide to 132F, which is medium rare. Bavette is kind of tough when cooked rare.

My plans of grilling were thwarted by ominous looking storm clouds and the threat of a thunder storm, I should have proceeded with the plan(still no rain) but instead opted to roast everything in the oven.
Polish sausage/leftover chicken leg/potatoes and corn with some jazzed up St Hubert chicken mushroom gravy. Stupid weather network. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:
