What's For Dinner #106 - the Sneezles & Wheezles Season Edition - May 2024

We enjoyed another sensational dinner at Fiorentini in Rutherford, NJ, including lamb saddle stuffed with spinach and raisin; poached hake with green beans, fresh peas, mussels, and nduja; veal tonnato; porcini mushroom risotto with braised faraona; burrata with prosciutto-cabbage terrine, horse radish vinaigrette; a post birthday coconut cheesecake with pineapple chutney, tarragon, and popcorn. It all went great with an excellent cabernet and red blend.

Bok choy with glazed shiitakes.

Squid & shrimp with herb sauce (my tarragon is out of control).

Came out good!

For dinner tonight I made some Cuban picadillo following this recipe:

with white rice and broccolini. It came out well and tasted good. It was a bit wetter than I thought it would be. Also, a daiquiri.

Vegetable chili made in the pressure cooker - we used Frijole Negro Santanero beans from Rancho Gordo which gave an incredible broth. Also used white mushrooms, onions, garlic, red peppers, crushed tomatoes, chipotle in adobo, chili and cumin powder, bay leaves, cilantro and vegetable broth. Topped with some sour cream and cheddar cheese.

Our final dinner in Palermo last night with our friends, who will be taking the ferry to Naples tonight (lucky b’stards) and spending another long week on the mainland, while we are headed back to Berlin.

We returned to the lovely ristorante on our street we went to the first night where we had the best caponata, and to sample more of their incredible pizza creations. We split the caponata & an insalata “Delicata” with my favorite lettuce of them all (mâche), parmesan flakes, bresaola, and balsamic glaze,

and ordered the afumata and the porchetta pizze.

The affumata was pleasantly smoky, but not overpoweringly so, and the porchetta pizza was a thing to behold: the thinly sliced lemon really took it over the top. House wines (Grillo & Nero) with, cocktails at the Farmacia Alcolica next door for dessert.

I didn’t expect to fall in love with Sicily, but I did. I’m so happy we took this trip, and it was such fun exploring the city and surroundings with good friends.
