As I’m sure everyone does, I have a friend who is (or was - maybe she’s better now) a terrible cook. Years ago, she was making pasta with seafood for us, so she brought the water to to a boil and threw the spaghetti in, along with the shrimp and scallops. A few minutes later she decided that we needed more spaghetti, so she threw that in as well. Once she was sure the second handful of spaghetti was done, she dumped everything into a colander and served it up. It was not a very good meal.
That sounds positively horrifying
The dish was actually quite tasty (mostly thx to my intervention), and he’s not a terrible cook per se. It was also a very generous amount of good quality seafood, so I ain’t gonna bitch at him…just refused to call it paella.
It was. I’m not sure how she’d gotten to the age she was at the time (late 30s, I think) without learning to make spaghetti. But not everyone cares all that much about what they eat.
He did. Peter Rabbit 2. We adults were mildly amused.
Yeah I bet it was hot with Commercial Red Curry Paste!
Sauce I made was:
1 T Oyster Sauce
2 tsp Soy Sauce( you can use half Thai Black Soy or Kecap Manis)
2 tsp Fish Sauce
2 T Chili Jam aka Nam Prik Pao(น้ำพริกเผา)
1.5 tsp Palm Sugar
.25 Ground White Pepper
I tried the TJ ones once and didn’t buy again, but as a friend in DC said to me, if there’s no other XLB available, they serve their purpose
I agree, the Mila ones I would get again though if I see them at Costco - they are not as good as the best restaurant XLB I’ve had but for frozen are very good.
Someone said it was a giant pack, otherwise I’d get them in a minute.
(Though tbh I much prefer the crab and pork kind, so I’m mostly patient about waiting to eat the restaurant ones I enjoy.)
30 pieces in a Package
Last night we had the last of the Costco purchased Mila pork and pork & shrimp soup dumpling. We have learned to steam longer than the package recommends and swap the baskets around if we are using both.
DH sauteed up some baby bok choy with garlic, ginger, dark soy to accompany.
Was a pretty satisfying Friday night dinner for 4.
We have the chicken dumplings left, we like those the least but will work through them.
My kind of meal!
Burgers and bagged avo-ranch salad with extra avo. I overcooked the burgers but given the state of industrial ground beef it was probably wise.
Thanks, I made a note for next time.
Humboldt Fog (mostly for me - BF cheerfully ate smoked Gouda and pepper jack), sautéed portobello mushrooms with shallots, garlic, and thyme, and scali bread. Sauvignon Blanc for me and IPA for him.
Some errands, but an easy Saturday.
Pan-seared D’Artagnan duck breast with blackberry sauce was dinner.
The sauce was a combo of sauteed minced shallots with grated ginger, balsamic vinegar, a squish of honey, a healthy pinch of s/p, a sploosh of white wine, 1/4 cup of chicken stock and a large handful of fresh blackberries.
Sauteed the shallots, added the ginger, then the rest of the ingredients, simmering everything to soften the blackberries, smushing them in the pot to release their juices.
Let everything simmer until reduced. Strained and mounted with some cold butter.
Israeli couscous cooked in homemade chicken stock with s/p and dried marjoram. Steamed asparagus alongside.
Wine. I bought the bottle because it was shaped like a bottle of whiskey and it had a cool name. It’s quite nice…a bit of oak and vanilla on the forefront, with a finish of honey and spices at the back end. At $12.99/bottle, I’ll stock up.
AND I’m using my new dishwasher for the first time tonight. Incredibly quiet, which is a bonus! Let’s see how it works on the dishes and 2 pots I put in there (which I usually never did in the past).
Arrrgh. The terrible DST lighting.
Homemade blueberry vareniki and pork-and-scallion pelmeni from the freezer. Illinois-squash-and-mashed-potato puree on the side.
Love that cheese. Its so good.
