What's for Dinner #104 - the Almost Green Edition - March 2024

I made some “arancini” with leftover chicken biryani and Swiss cheese.

I couldn’t agree more

I wholeheartedly agree that fresh stuffed grape leaves are VASTLY superior to canned ones. But rather than hound my sister to take me to a restaurant that serves them or God forbid I go on my own to a restaurant that serves them and risk the wrath of my sister, I made do with what I could get a hold of.

Stuffed grape leaves are a comfort food to me to as was my Nana Pauline’s stuffed cabbage.

And I’d rather starve than eat any canned ravioli or other canned pasta. They are disgusting, if you ask me.

I liked their quinoa-stuffed dolmas, which they discontinued. They were a lot less mushy.

That’s clever

I’m sorry you’ve had such sub-par experiences with canned dolma. Having had fresh, cold, warm, from various countries and styles, I very much enjoy TJ’s and some of the Turkish and Greek brands available to me without having to make them myself, which takes several hours.

Are canned ravioli a Canadian thing?

That’s hilarious! Thanks for the morning chuckle.

My local Safeway has these for 6 bucks or two for 10. They’re pretty darned good…

Chickpeas? Quinoa? Why are folks putting those things in dolma? Rice, onion, olive oil, lemon, dill - that’s all you really need for a good dolma.

Of course, we all have our own preferences

Oh, now I remember canned “ravioli.” I musta blocked that memory from over 40 years ago from my mind

Because delicious.

I am guessing you were replying to me.

They might have been this brand under TJ’s private label: https://www.paliria.com/en/product/quinoa-dolmas/

Exactly. Some of us live near Greek markets or are Greek themselves, growing up learning how to make dolmas. Others have to make do with what they can get at stores. @TokushimaCook will eventually learn where decent restaurants or marketplaces are near them so they can buy fresh. But when a craving hits and canned is the quick port in a storm? You make do.

Thanks. Sometimes cravings just have to be satisfied. The canned ones were by no means my first choice, but they hit the spot and were reasonably priced as well ($2.70). There are numerous Mediterranean restaurants in the immediate area, but I just need to cajole my sister enough times to finally convince her that a visit to one of them is in order.

It’s an old family favorite, hard to find in Greek restaurants. Lamb and rice meatballs simmered for an hour in home made chicken stock with onion, garlic, thyme and oregano, flavored with avgolemono after cooking. I use brown jasmine rice–white rice might not take as long to cook.
