What's For Dinner #102 - the Out With the Old Edition - January 2024

I gave him $40 USD, an amount that caused mom to raise her eyebrows. But yknow, inflation.

Total snow bust in the DC area, at least where I am. Sleety flakes in the early AM so I walked down to the farmers market. By the time I got home the rain started. Dinner was the roast turkey repurposed into pot pie. Served with a tomato cuke salad and pineapple chunks.

Had a bit of crust left over so that got turned into a tiny little Pyrex ramekin blueberry pie for spouse and #1 son.

We had reservations at a nice restaurant about 1 hour away, but Mother Nature had other plans, and we had to pivot to a local restaurant (Bloom in Verona, NJ) about 20 minutes away. Not bad for plan B.
We enjoyed crispy slow cooked pork belly with a jalapeño miso glaze, sautéed spinach, couscous, sun-dried tomatoes, cherry reduction; crispy shrimp balls with Garlic aioli, pickled shallots and mango habanero sauce; crispy skinned branzino with Fregola, sun-dried tomato, parsnip puree, olive oil; fried shishito peppers; and truffle fries. It all went great with some excellent cabernets.

Finally had our Korean New Year’s meal of dduk guk (rice cake soup). Of course, I chose today (out of necessity) to go to Hmart, the day before a potentially big yucky wet snow overnight in Greater Boston. Predictably, It was a zoo. But so worth it. Spring Onion is starting to appreciate his Korean half. Used turkey broth that B made from our xmas turkey carcass which I just can’t face as a former vegetarian. So props to him. I added pork dumplings and thin-sliced Wagyu beef for the guys. Kimchee and Korean omelet from HMart on the side. Spring Onion wolfed it down. We have good food and wine and beer in the house and our snow tube and sled at the ready. I’m a happy mama. Lame-o photo and the rice cakes are totally buried underneath the dumplingsbut why change now?!

Mig, I like it as a healthy meal I can get within 20 minutes of my apartment during a storm, but I have some other suggestions I think you’d like .

Oh - you mean actual Mac & Cheese when you say “chili mac” - I’ve never seen it served that way. We cook macaroni and mix it with chili, top with shredded cheddar. That’s what we’ve always called “chili mac”. We had it tonight for dinner! Yours looks delicious!

This is how we do it - though we put the mac n cheese on the bottom.

I think all roads lead to the same dish by the time you get to the bottom of the bowl. I guess my version (and ChristinaM’s) is the deconstructed version.

Lobster tails.

Meatloaf sandwich. Fried in butter on a buttered toasted French sandwich roll with sliced sweet onion and spicy ketchup. McCain onion rings, mixed green salad, red onion, grape tomatoes, pickled beets, blue cheese, ranch. Beefeater slushy. I cleaned all the cracked ice out of the bottom of my ice bin, packed it in a glass and put it in the freezer. When it was time for a cocktail I poured gin over it.

After spending the day cleaning out kitchen cupboards I declared it take out night so I ordered a Mediterranean pizza from our local pizza joint. The toppings include artichoke hearts, rwd pepper black olives and feta cheese.
