What's for Dinner #100 - The WFD Big 100th Edition - November 2023

Glad you were able to eat. Sorry about getting Covid again. :disappointed_relieved: Hope it eases quickly and you’re back to yourself very soon!

Spent the day with my sister on the South Shore doing some antiquing at new-to-us places. I got an old wooden stirrer (probably a wooden spoon that had split and was smoothed out on the edges) at the first place we were at, and that’s it. But it was a good day to hang out. She needed it.

Dinner had to be easy, as I got home late, so cellantani pasta with sauteed carrots, asparagus, onion, and red bell pepper in a Parma-Rosa sauce did the trick.

There was wine.

A sign I saw along the way that rings true.

And the boyz decided to be relatively calm this evening after a short period of after-dinner Zoomies.

After what seems like too many days of eating fried shit n cheesy carbs I had a serious craving for a ginormous salad – which is good, cuz there’s some fridge clean-out that needed to happen today: two gem lettuces, a bit of iceberg, a whole avocado, carrots, half a seedless cuke, radishes, flavor bomb tomatoes, the last of the roti chicken breast, and a lil bacon on top. Also, burrata with basil oil and red pepper soup for my PIC, who doesn’t care for “just salad” for dinner.

Stuffed.

Thank you  Yes, Gucci is the cat, and Matisse is the dog.

WFD tonight is an $11 bag of popcorn and a hockey game. Seattle Kraken vs. Calgary Flames. I’m rooting for both.

Chicken Piccata, extra capers as usual, with sautéed broccoli rabe and a side of crispy gnocchi with Pecorino. I also took an artisan olive oil flatbread from the supermarket and made breadsticks out of it by heating it with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and Pecorino. Reminiscent of a nostalgic Pizza Hut breadstick, and I’m okay with that. I’m enjoying having a bit more free time in November to actually cook meals like this. Pots and pans everywhere!

There was a martini. Or two. It’s a Saturday.

It is so quiet, the torrential rains pounding the roof all day have finally stopped. I’m afraid to check my driveway, the gravel is probably in the Pacific.
Spaghetti for dinner. Italian sausage, onion, garlic, splash of red wine, jarred marinara sauce, roasted cherry tomatoes, parm, basil. Toasted baguette. Little gem, orange bell, radish, green onion salad, caesar dressing. There was a Manhattan and wine.

I know, but what is a Kraken. Never mind, I googled, it is a sea monster.

Yep. Usually a giant octopus.

We enjoyed another outstanding dinner at Drew’s in Keyport, NJ, including Cajun surf and turf with NY strip steak and Cajun shrimp; Cajun shrimp and grits; fig and gorgonzola toast; muffuletta salad with nduja and burrata; boudin spring rolls; escargot; It all went great with an excellent cabernet and Chateauneuf Du Pape.

We had chicken and sausage gumbo. It’s one of my partner’s favourites and considering it’s been incredibly rainy and foggy all Autumn, this was a lovely bowl of comfort. I do mine with green beans rather than okra, okra is hard to find here and I don’t think my partner would like it nearly as much either so it’s non traditional definitely but delicious nonetheless.

Gorgeous meal! I recently ran across that website myself (Hot Thai Kitchen) and have been having fun exploring. I like the way she explains ingredients and offers substitutions. So encouraging to me.

Unexpected bonus round of summer produce, thanks to corn and tomatoes harvested by the CSA before a hard frost hit this week. Made a vibrant sauce for eggplant and mozzarella ravioli from Valicenti Pasta Farm (local product).

I love her site! Her most recent recipe is a copycat for Thai KFC style wings that is now on my list of things to make. Her YouTube channel is great, too!
