And toothpaste came in lead tubes! You could scribble your name with the corner of a toothpaste tube. And, our suburban house had asbestos shingles–the builder left a pile of them in the garage, and we would chip them apart and write on the driveway with them.
I’m seeing no reason to further age my older wines, since none of them are cabs or bourgognes. This is a 2001 Bandol that I got because I heard that mourvedres aged well. It had no flaws, no oxidation. The flavors were a little muted, though. A good age to open it.
Another oldie, a 2001 Priorat. I belonged to a wine club back then, probably at K&L in San Francisco. It still had lively fruit, with smooth tannins, no oxidation. Grenache is so versatile.

Sometime in the 70s, my brother borrowed a friend’s huge old Rolls and drove the family up from Sausalito to a picnic at Chateau Montelena. We had the most wonderful time. ![]()
On the island??? They stopped letting people visit the island decades ago.
We were the only ones there. I remember looking out at the island and pagoda but can’t remember if we had our picnic there. I think my brother and/or his friend who was a big media person had some special connection with 'Montelena.
I checked with the only other remaining person from that day, and we did indeed have our picnic in the pagoda.
That’s a unique and spectacular setting. And visits are rare now.
Served alongside halibut baked with lemon, green olives and capers, and roasted potatoes and kabocha squash.
