Several years ago we were leaving the Mesquite Tx WM. There was a man with his probably 10 year old son with a sign about being homeless and broke. His son was happy go lucky with a basketball. A few weeks later they were still there and the poor kid had a defiant look on his face, No telling what people said to his father.
I’ve read those stories too. While some might be true my gut says most are just urban legends.
My gut may say the same. Except in the example I cited:
1-I saw the man and kids with my own eyes
2-I read the chatter as it happened on a neighborhood site that I still subscribe to. It is a site on which you register\post with your real name.
3-I saw the photo on that same site\discussion
4-I have not seen the man and his kids since and the chatter on the neighborhood site ceased
I am sure there are urban legends. And I am certainly sure there are people in desperate need. I just choose to focus my time and money on local organizations that I know are channeling their money and efforts where they know the need exists.
Lincoln once said something to the effect, “people are about as happy as they decide to be”. And I’ve read that our happiness largely depends on on the quality of our thoughts. I can relate to those ideas. And while I’ve not had an easy life I know it’s been a darn sight better than others. So it’s easy for me to think to think like Lincoln and that unnamed person.
And it’s noble of you to so. But your post on giving to certain organization is separate from the post about the panhandler driving away in a car better than most people’s car. That I suspect is moreover an urban legend. But sure I concede there are professional panhandlers.
You are free to suspect. I can only relate my experience; I cannot expect people to accept it as such.
Yes indeed
Professional panhandling aside…blessing to you for giving. I apologize if I sent a bad tone.
A little healthy skepticism never requires an apology.
I know this doesn’t have anything to do with your Abe Lincoln quote but:
Ronald Reagan:
“The nine most terrifying words in the English language are:”
“I’m from the government and I’m here to help”.
I like that quote very much.
Oooo Can I change my handle here to two nosed Mona Lisa? Would love that! Hmm I need a new toon on diablo three. Also would be a good name for a gaming character. Sweet.
My grandfather used to say “people are about as happy as they decide to be”. Did not realize he was quoting.
Welcome to the Jungle. And sadly no link to that song either. I keep my promises. Nice to see you posting here where we don’t always keep things all civil like." I might get broiled alive here" Naw. Dunno if it is the moon or the weather but it seems to be a nice time to post. Some guardian angels on my beloved Lidl Nerd Community let me finally tell my story about the insane manager. Over there you can close the post to comments if you are the OP. Now that site is fun. I should go see if my bodyguards are still holding off the angry mob.
Drop and give me twenty. Right now and don’t be eyeballing me boy. You ain’t no mage and that is for sure. You take the spec I pick and no back talk. Take it and like it. You are obviously a cleric. You have rez and mez and healing. Since you will be on Dark Age of Camelot you will be an undead cleric and have the powerful fear spell. That is probably the spell that makes you grin as you watch all the enemies run from you and then the rest of your group can lay waste to them. Your healing powers make you beloved to all and your group protects you to the death because if you go down they all go down. You have great power to turn epic brawls to your favor as you watch enemies fall. But actual damage. Not so much. Forget about it.
We were talking a lot about cats a few days ago. Made me think of viking kitties.
My ‘friendly’ Neighborhood group back home was reporting on a family near Target/Walmart with changing actors these last couple of days as well. While it does sound like a scam in this case (and perhaps yours), the underlying xenophobia and classism in the reactions is revolting.
Gosh, can’t wait to get back!
I was trying to post a short clip of last night’s show, but it’s too big.
Let’s just say he (and his incredible bandmates on bass & drums & harmonies) did not disappoint
