Blood & Gold (2023). A German nazi revenge spaghetti western, brought to you by the same director who created Blood Red Sky (nazi zombies on a plane, in a nutshell). Not for the faint of heart.
This COULD go into the ‘what are you listening to?’ thread, but much like the Talking Heads Stop Making Sense, this concert film brings additional richness to the music. It’s hard to convey the beauty of Anderson dancing gently across the stage with William S. Burroughs in audio form. And Adrian Belew’s squealing, bending notes come not just from his technique, but from an actual BENDABLE GUITAR. To say Anderson was an innovator is putting it mildly. She’s in there with Kraftwerk and other early pioneers of electronic music.
Fun fact: This performance was recorded with what was then new state-of-the-art DIGITAL audio, and played back in at least one theater in NYC through a new digital sound system. It is the first (as far as I know) feature film with a digital soundtrack.
It’s never been put out on blu-ray, but this youtube pull from an old DVD copy is better than nothing. I was lucky to see a rare showing of this in 35mm many years ago.
I loved this latest season Netflix put up. I think they have 6 or 7 seasons and I would love to watch them all. It’s the perfect antidote after I’ve watched some heavy drama or murder mystery on TV. The kids are all wonderful and so accomplished!
Nature on PBS, ‘Cuba’s Wild Revolution’. Wednesday evenings around here are dedicated to PBS science and nature programs. Nature, Nova, Secrets of the Dead, Changing Planet, etc.
Really enjoyed The Cook Along. Apparently I had already watched some of an earlier season.
On one episode of “The Cook Along”, which is based in South Africa, they are sourcing Baobab tree dust. Apparently the tree takes 200 years to bear fruit, and lives for up to 2000 years. They also harvested moringa. One irritation in that episode was a seed saving guy said " all squash comes from the US", but I think he meant all squash comes from America.
From Wikipedia
" The Panke baobab in Zimbabwe was some 2,450 years old when it died in 2011, making it the oldest angiosperm ever documented[citation needed], and two other trees—Dorslandboom in Namibia and Glencoe in South Africa—were estimated to be approximately 2,000 years old.[26]"
New show on the Roku channel. Morimoto’s Sushi Master. Sushi chef competition hosted and judged by Masaharu Morimoto. J Kenji Lopez-Alt is also a judge.
Standard professional competition show. No sign of a ‘screw your competitors’ vibe. These are all high end folks.
Morimoto is hamming it up a bit but that seems to be his public persona. The cooking is on point.
i mostly appreciate this show. the new season is pretty strong so far. if you aren’t in the mood for the depressing bleakness that permeates much of the series, i’d recommend S6 Ep 1, as it’s tinged with a fair amount of humor. the current content streaming landscape takes a lot of hits in this season.
