was hoping to see american fiction before the oscars
I thought I saw it available on Prime, but with a fee. I didn’t try to watch it, so I can’t be sure.

yeh — it’s $15 to buy it — i can wait:)
The Zone of Interest is so excellent. I definitely recommend watching it in the cinema because the sound design is so good, and really, crucial to the experience. I watched it all by my lonesome (as I watch many films by choice) and on my birthday (during a busy time, I had to treat myself and 1) the timing aligned-- I watched All of Us Strangers which was exquisite and I knew would make me cry on another day); 2) I really wanted to. I’m just hoping I can get a look at Occupied City next.
I found it really enjoyable although I also really value this piece which brings in some necessary critique: https://defector.com/american-fiction-and-the-wet-eyes-of-the-sentimentalist
I watched American Fiction on Prime because I really wanted to see it. I’m glad I did. The Prime price seems to vary from day to day.
I’m glad to hear that! (not that the price varies, but that you are glad you did).
I love to think that means the artists involved (which include my brother,) get paid better, or at least feel more appreciated, when customers are willing to pay extra to see “their movie”.
I don’t even know if they can tell, but won’t be bringing this one up with my brother, as this movie in particular is sure to make him crazy.
I need to add that to my watch list as well. Thx for the reminder!
Any special reason? Just curious.
The short answer is, it makes him crazy when someone is interested in working with him for what I think he would call a Black “narrative”.
I’m all for DEI, and believe with all my heart that representation matters, but when you feel like you’re the token, the dynamic shifts dramatically.
I watched the first episode of The Regime yesterday. I love Kate Winslet, so I will continue…but for now I am mostly confused It is Stephen Frears, after all.
I felt the same way.
The scene where she, um, “sings” had me in stitches, tho.
It’s weird but I have high hopes because of the people involved. Looking forward to Hugh Grant showing up.
On a lighter note, the new series of Somebody Feed Phil is charming or at least the first two I’ve watched have been really good. Kyoto episode was interesting with Rene Redzepi of Noma fame showing up and also loved the Mumbai episode.
There’s a thread about it here:
Watched Taipei and Scotland tonight. Both excellent.
Just finished MacDonald and Dodd.
Now watching
this was a fun little watch (part I is also good). found myself thinking “how is it that i haven’t seen this?” or “i really need to watch that again”.
We watched this last night, and I actually got through the whole thing in one sitting. So it must’ve been good. But why did the kid try to poison the dog???
in order to test the theory that snoop got sick earlier from eating the aspirin from his dad’s vomit. since the result of the experiment was comparable in results, it bolsters the theory of the dad’s suicide attempt. that scene was rough. great movie!
