For all our pet lovers
You will cry. Sorry, not sorry.

Did you mean to post that here?
As someone who has dug graves for 7 dogs (actually 8 if you include my fils) since I moved here 43 years ago, I understand exactly how he feels. They were all the best dog ever.
Stop Motion (2023) - dir. Robert Morgan
Ella is a stop motion animator, building puppets and tabletop sets and moving them millimeters per frame to bring them to life. Thus far, all her work has been in service to the creative visions of her mother, a master animator and filmmaker whose hands have become crippled by arthritis. Ella’s frustration is palpable.
Then mom has a stroke, and for the first time, Ella has the opportunity to make her OWN films. But she has no ideas. Only the suggestions of an odd and morbid little girl from her new building.
From there, we’re met with emotional breakdown, madness, and murder, accompanied by super creepy stop motion reminiscent of the Quay Bros. or a 90’s
Tool music video, as well as some truly gory and excellently done practal effects.
And all this is well and good, except… I’ve seen all this before. The artist going mad, hallucinations with lots of giallo-like lighting and editing tricks, and with a heavy dose of “but really, it’s all about trauma…”
The symbolism, the plot twists, the themes are all blindingly obvious the moment they appear.
Individually, all the parts of this film are well executed. But the whole thing doesn’t gel. It’s a series of interesting, if not very original ideas, with only the barest connective tissue.
It’s a Shudder production, so it’ll hit streaming fairly soon. Probably worth a watch if your a horror fan, but temper you expectations.
Thank you for posting that. I needed to cry and knew that watching something like that would turn on the waterworks and it did the trick. I’ve long said that I love animals, especially dogs much more than humans and besides only ONE truly amazing friend and my late, great Nana Pauline, I still hold that to be true.
Same. I cared what happened to the characters, which is more than I can say for Oppenheimer.
@BeefeaterRocks thanks for the The English recommendation. We both very much enjoyed it - really unusual
We finally watched Killers of The Flower Moon last night and enjoyed it more than we thought it would. Helps to have a projector & a screen in the house (and wine, and other sundry items ), and not be bound to movie theater seats for the 3+ hours. I kept hoping the woman would finally strangle fat face diCaprio, but no such luck.
Still want to see Zone of Interest and Poor Things.
You’re welcome, glad you liked it.
Watched first episode of two new shows last night and enjoyed them both. Elsbeth, is a spin-off of a character that was in the Good Wife and Good Fight. It’s a very quirky lawyer helping police solve cases in NYC. Watched on Hulu live and it’s on cbs. Adventures of Dick Turpin is on Apple and is also super quirky and funny. Stars Noel from Great British baking show and has lots of great English actors popping into scenes.
I really want to see Zone… but I’m hesitant to go. The partner has no interest and I don’t know if I want to be in a horrible mood for the next day all by my lonesome.
Poor Things is hitting Hulu on March 7.
Shogun, Episodes 1 & 2, Hulu
enjoyed the novel and the mini-series that followed in 1980 (Richard Chamberlin). if the first attempt was a telling of the intersection of an English merchant with Feudal Japan, this new version is more Feudal Japan happens to encounter an Englishman. the change of focus is welcome when the high production values more than support it. very detailed settings, great cast … will be interesting to see if it can stay at this high level.
check out the min-docs that accompany it, which give some behind the scenes on how it was made. i thought it fascinating that they employed a Master of Gestures on the set.
Three months of Apple TV free, thanks to a new iPad purchase by hubby. Watched Greyhounds last night, liked the big battle scenes a lot. But always have, I wait patiently for the next Master & Commander movie but I suppose Russell is getting a little long in the tooth for one.
Slow Horses on the list, looking for more recommendations-Thanks
I looked up scratchings!
agreed — of course, we already knew what happened to the oppenheimers:)
really glad i watch this at home and not in a theater. the first 2 hours were brutal — would have fallen asleep before things picked up in the last hour.
I feel this way about almost everything. Barbie was great in the theater, but I could’ve watched The Taste of Things at home.
New season of Somebody Feed Phil is on Netflix now. Always fun to watch.
1961- The Price Is Right. A little trip down memory lane on BUZZR channel. Make sure you stay tuned til the end. Real Estate.
glad i saw barbie in a theatre, as well.
so far, i’ve seen 5 of the nominated films. i’ll take a look at poor things since it’s on hulu. was hoping to see american fiction before the oscars, but it’s only in theaters. not sure i’ll be able to fit it into my schedule — kind of annoyed that amazon is taking so long to put it on prime.
