Watching Little Fires Everywhere on Prime, starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. Liking it

No Sudden Move from 2021. One of Ray Liotta’s last roles, and with a pretty stellar cast overall: Benicio del Toro (whom I’d watch in anything), Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Kieran Culkin, Jon Hamm… nuff said.

And it’s Soderbergh, so - a good watch after a few mediocre flicks recently.

Warrior (HBO) - terrific series depicting the Chinese in early 19th century San Francisco. Think gangs, martial arts, and snippets of the wild west. Starting season 3 now.

I loved that one! And I love when my fellow Onions include links to trailers! I didn’t realize which movie you were referring to until I watched the trailer, but it sounded like something I would like.

Sometimes the links work, sometimes they don’t

I always try to include at least a link to the imdb site, so fellow onions can check it out.

First episode is on DM.

So we’re finally, FINALLY watching The Bear. About 5-6 episodes in to the first season.

Boy, is this a great show. The acting is pitch perfect (Ayo Edibiri is a joy!), I’ve been REALLY impressed with the cinematography and production design (man, oh man, I can smell that restaurant. I know that neighborhood) and the writing has been top notch.

And I have to say, I’m somewhat encouraged by the relatively short (10 ep, I think?) seasons, with loose running times from 25-48 minutes, which means they’re taking only the time they need per episode. At least, that seems to be what’s happening thus far. I can’t wait to get back to it, and I’m pleased to know there’s a season 3 to look forward to.

In other serialized comedy news, Letterkenny has come to a reasonable, fitting end. It’s pretty universally agreed that the shows earlier seasons are generally better than the later ones, though all have their high and low points. It was time to end it, rather than try to wring out another season (and another paycheck) of a premise whose time had come to a natural, and very dignified end, or at least as dignified as a show about Canadian hicks drinkin’ ‘n’ fightin’ and engaging in the fastest, quippiest wordplay of any show since, just about ever can come to. If you haven’t ever seen it, I HIGHLY recommend it. If you have, and you’ll miss it, fear not, as you have its spin-off, Shoresy, and season 2 is coming soon.

And, finally, in I-was-really-really-bored-one-week news, I watched all the Hellraiser movies, with the exception of the recent remake, which I actually quite liked when I saw it originally. I meant to watch it again this time, but didn’t get to it.

The first is a horror classic for a reason, Barker’s twisted, kinky, leather-n-chains version of hell was absolutely bonkers back in the 80’s when it came out, and is still plenty weird and disturbing, now, and the goopy, flesh-tearing effects are great fun. The 2nd is a worthy sequel.

3 and 4 are… well… someone described them as ‘mid-level Freddy movies’ and that’s not far off. They’re cheesy. They’re fine as a sunday afternoon folding laundry time killer.

After that, things are… bad. Very bad. Bad enough I would warn you to stay far away from any of them unless you’re some weird obsessive completist (guilty) or the type that just has to see how dire things can get (also guilty).

But absolutely give the 2021 remake a whirl. It’s very much its own thing, and Jamie Clayton kills it as a different kind of Pinhead.

Letterkenny is one of the smartest, funniest shows in recent history. I’ve not checked out Shoresy.

Worth it?

Watched the first episode last night. The opening music and Andi’s voice was like a warm hug.

If you already were sold on Letterkenny, Shoresy is 100% worth a watch. Similar (though not quite identical) style and humor. Similarly short, fast paced episodes, so your commitment never feels overwhelming.

We started watching Three Pines recently, and are into it. I did a search in this thread bc I coulda sworn that @Phoenikia or someone had mentioned it, but nothing came up.

Anyway, it’s an interesting whodunnit with Alfred Molina (among others), with each case consisting of 2 consecutive episodes, and with a sort of “uberplot” about unsolved cases of First Nation women who have gone missing.

Sweet! I’m hoarding for a binge.

just had a manageable binge with season 1 and 2 of ‘happy valley’ — total 12 episodes

created by sally wainright (last tango in halifax, which i loved), it’s dark, for sure, but tightly written and incredible performances: sarah lancaster and siobhan finneran standout in a great cast.

Tried to watch Masters of the Air, since it’s gotten so many accolades. Couldn’t get past the first half of the second episode.

Characters aren’t interesting, and it couldn’t be more Spielbergian if it had a cute alien in it. Nope.

Also watched Dinner Time live with David Chang

@Rickbern

Well, I’ve been on some weird binges as I work through jet lag.

Currently rewatching “The Fall” (on Acorn, but it’s available elsewhere) — Jamie Dorman long before 50 Shades :joy:, Jillian Anderson — have loved her since the X-Files, but her range is stunning, and many more familiar faces.

:
Death and Other Details: I mentioned this earlier, it’s like Agatha Christie-lite, still kind of delicious, and I should have left it alone till all the episodes were out, but now I’m in it :joy:

Damages: another rewatch, so dark, Glenn Close doing her thing, the show that made Rose Byrne, Ted Danson in a fabulous dark turn. But I enjoyed this a lot more when it was originally on.

Fargo: S5 was good, I enjoy Jon Hamm flexing his acting range beyond “hunk”, the storyline was good, Juno Temple was fabulous and fierce.

I tried to go back and rewatch S3 & S4, when the show lost me, and I don’t know that I’m going to get through them even on second attempt, they’re so much weaker than 1 & 2 (& 5). Also — wtf is happening in Minnesota???:rofl::rofl: And always in the winter???:rofl::rofl:

Speaking of Jon Hamm, such good chemistry with Tina Fey since the 30 Rock days —
I had totally missed Maggie Moore(s) when it came out:

.

And I adore David Oyelowo all the way from MI-5 days, but it was hard to make up for both a terrible storyline and a terrible co-lead in Role Play. Now I need to rewatch Mr & Mrs Smith, Game Night, and Date Night all to make up for it.

.

Also mourning the loss / conversion of David Chang from nyc chef to TV personality as he continues with his streaming empire expansion with not one but two new reality-ish shows last week — Chrissy (Teigen) & Dave Dine Out, and the other one pretty much the inverse, ie dining in, where he cooks for other celebs at “home”, “Dinner Time Live”.

Wish there was a S3 of Ugly Delicious in the works instead of these, but I guess reality is where the money is.

Posted this in a clay pot cooking thread, someone recommended I put it here

If you’re interested in some charming videos of a handsome man traveling around France, Spain and Portugal, cooking traditional dishes in the area where they originated, by all means check out Pete’s Pans. Sometimes he uses the traditional pot the dish was originally cooked in.

Similar ideas to the Chef Show with Roy Choi and Jon Favreau. Really liked that show but I think the genre is running out of new interesting ideas. The first episode of Dine Out was kind of cringey.

Also want to check out Death and other Details plus the new show set in Hong Kong The Expats. Enjoying Criminal Record on Apple and looking forward to Feud-story about Truman Capote and his falling out with NYC elite society.
