What Fast Food Chain Do You Love?

I used to eat their poundcake like that, too. Not frozen, but 3/4 thawed.

What locales do Kansans joke about? In WI we can be brutal on FIBs (Illinois , particularly Chicago, folks). What places do Germans joke about? I’ve noticed that many Polish take roles in Germany, as Mexicans do in the US. They do the work nobody else wants to do.

When I lived in Boston in the 80s I drank many gallons of ABP iced coffee!

There was a local business here who made desserts for restaurants. They had an outlet store. Many a lemon pound cake found a home in my freezer -until it was decimated, slice by delicious, frozen slice.

Lemon is my weakness, too. Lemon poppyseed muffins, poundcake, etc. The cold does do a little sumfin sumfin for it.

So I finally tried my first Shake Shack – had the avocado bacon double and a cookies and cream shake.

Shake was decent, but the burger was a total saltbomb – beef patties were way overseasoned.

Did I get a bad batch, or is this typical for Shake Shack?

Probably not. Just like 5 Guys. All these new places are mediocre. Nothing like the classics when competition was real. Today these new food joints are just parts of big corporate conglomo’s. A few mega corps. own everything we buy. Quality and low prices suffer from lack of competition. Monopoly laws might as well be non existent and basically are. That is the crux of the matter. I might add the allowance of artificial ingredients and chemicals to our foods also contribute to the problems. Imagine a time with all real natural ingredients ? Even KASHI cereals removed the “all natural” labeling from their packaging once they were caught putting “hexane-processed soy ingredients” into their recipes. Soy is one of the worst health offenders. All plant based man-made foods are detrimental to good health and cause disease. Eat natural like nature intended. Mom & Pop restaurants that source they foods from the Amish, and non GMO, organic suppliers and farms.

Sorry for your bad food.

I really want to make the Lemon Delight Stanley Tucci featured on the Amalfi coast. Talk about the opposite of fast food (although not as extreme as cassoulet or Napoleons). I, too, adore anything with a prominent lemon aspect. I have come to prefer poached egg on an English muffin with a good squeeze of lemon to Eggs Benedict!

That’s a broad brush (as usual). Many Amish use pesticides & don’t give two fucks about animal welfare, which is why I prefer other local farm stands at the market.

Like… Taco Bell and all the other FF chains you love? That’s pretty hilarious in context.

I will not even attempt to wade into the details militating in favor of or against the sentiment, but it seems to me that growing or harvesting plants to be eaten as plants is preferable than trying to turn them into something more like meat, growing them with thoughtful organic techniques is ultimately better for the world and those who inhabit it, and if you like meat (I do), treating the animals well is a good idea. The disproportionately large role that meat plays in the USA diet certainly raises issues for meat eaters, but it also causes large scale ecological problems. The niche the fast food burger occupies is awfully large.

As an aside, far, far from fast food, most of the southern USA and much of the rest is full of unpleasant bugs as well as many necessary ones, like bees. In addition to their roles as pollinators, these critters are essential to the food chain as well as keeping each other in balance. Many of my neighbors have their lawns sprayed and their homes treated using pyrethrins or bifen. The companies marketing these things assert, uncontested by the unarmed customer, that these are made from chrysanthemums, are natural, and are harmless to bees. The National Insecticide Information Center (and others) call bullshit and say they are very dangerous to bees, fish, and other wildlife and contaminate our groundwater.

As many crunchy tacos and green burritos as I have enjoyed at Taco Bell, as many double-doubles and fries as I have enjoyed at In-N-Out, and so on, I am much more appreciative of their role in our larger world and eat them much less often as guilty treats.

Some of my favorite truly fast food is to be had at my local farmers’ market: breakfast tacos, barbecued brisket, pork, and sausage, potstickers, gumbo.

Absolutely! Who wants Fake Meat when there are so many delicious vegetable/vegetarian dishes, particularly recipes from cultures/traditions where vegetables make up the greater or the whole part of the diet? They’ve got it figured out. No need for a Tofu Hot Dog. (Just eat tofu as tofu, or not …)

What are you even talking about? I’m in Southern California – there’s nowhere else with more competition in the fast food scene from (inter)national chains to local chains to one-off burger stands.

All I want to know is if Shake Shack is usually as much of a total salt bomb as I experienced, or if I had an atypical experience, but it sounds like you’ve never eaten at one yourself…

It is quite salty, but I don’t think it’s the burger patty, per se.

It’s more the shack sauce than anything else.

I always get the burger without any sauce (and no cheese, but’s more of a me thing than a salt thing).

My go-to order is a Double Smoke Shack, no sauce, no cheese, and extra lettuce and onions for crunch.

My most recent Shake Shack order, just a Double x2.

The meat on its own, shorn of any accoutrements, is very tasty and beefy.
