Yeah, that’s the Keto version.
I get two Texas Toasts, and a side of slaw.
Good eating!

that’s some epic thrift! i’ll do you one better (or worse): my college had a long tradition of turning a blind eye to organized ‘scrounging’ in the cafeteria. un-eaten portions of cafeteria food were diverted from the refuse conveyer belt and offered up for anyone to partake via a side counter. cafeteria dumpster diving essentially (without the dumpster). being a scrounger sustained me through many a semester. to this day i have a near maniacal aversion to food waste.
That is impressive. Also impressive (in a good way, to me) that at that time they weren’t afraid to let people have perfectly good food. Nowadays it seems insurers clamp down and forbid it. We (in the US, I mean) seem to waste so much food, especially large purveyors.
As an engineer I wrote and distributed to a small group a satirical memo after the company started heavily reducing per diem and hotel spend, despite still requiring us to travel pretty heavily (I was generally on the road 35-40 weeks per year). The memo told a long tale about how, even without a club membership to Costco or BJ’s or Sam’s, one could usually enter and within just an hour or so collect enough from their ubiquitous samples displays to make a good meal, then went off into cheap or free hoteling options including making friends at homeless tent camps and bridge underpasses.
Unfortunately it got a wider audience than I’d originally intended and I got into a bit of hot water from the HR Chief, who was spearheading the cost cutting initiative. She never really forgave me for it.
I was just told about the slurry by a friend after my head scratching. Never noticed any texture, so I thought he must be right. I pass one all the time; but, I pass on that. Love the Jamocha shake. All I know.
I went to the stale bread store, too. All the time. Also lived off of eggs (and ramen). Sounds like we had similar budgetary considerations. I also had access to cheap cheese, which would adorn my egg samiches. I also worked at a gas station that had the hot dog/sausage roller. End of the night was our dinner on those rollers. loved the jalapeno sausages.
I still go to the stale bread store.
I’m a proud cheapskate
Taco Bell became Toxic Hell when YUM took over. They destroyed the best Tex Mex chain ever created. I know every detail of what was done. Now they can’t even make the half azzed Mexican Pizza at the very least like this picture below:
They hardly put any toppings anymore. Just a splotch of 3 dices of tomato, tablespoon of sauce and literally 8 fine slivers of shredded three cheese blend. The whole perimeter of the wafer is bare now. And you pay $5.00 for it.
On the national scene, Taco Bell was “it,” but in Texas there is a chain called Taco Palenque that started in the valley and had expanded northward as far as New Braunfels. I sure hope they push on into Austin. They are wonderful.
I hope they do for your benefit. I wish you best of luck. But here in NY, we are screwed. Once Taco Bell died, it was game over. RIP Taco Bell. Mr. Glenn Bell you tried, but they washed your legacy down the drain. They dance on your grave now. I am very sorry.
There’s a Taco Bell reddit?
Well, it is easy to re-create Taco Bell tacos, burritos, and tostadas. You can even make them easy to load with the Old El Paso flat bottom shells for the tacos! I re-create their burritos in the microwave pretty often.
Lots of lentils, a bushel of apples, and a big block of government cheese was the bulk of my diet in law school. Also, being in Oregon at the time, blackberries and mushrooms were easy to forage.
After years of trying, I think I have recreated my favorite tostada from Estradas (3 locations in CA).
I’m sure you, or somsone you know, can find a way to recreate your favorite TB items. Best of luck!
I saw your post on the topic. That’s what I was jokingly referencing.
Yes ! I use the Old El Paso flat bottoms for my tacos too. Burritos easy to copy. Nachos Belgrande no problem. Enchirito as well. My only sticker is the Pizzazz Pizza aka Mexican Pizza. The wafers are elusive to copy, and the Taco salad bowl. Hint on the taco shells. Warm them in the oven for 10 minutes @ 250. It does two things. It makes them crumble easily so that when you bite them they don’t cut your gums. Secondly, even if stale? It brings them right back to freshness. Amazing.
I bought a 10 lb bag of frozen siu mai and a 10 lb bag of frozen har gow in Chinatown my last year of law school, to have a quick meal I could cook in 10 minutes. I haven’t been able to eat siu mai since. I still like other types of dim sum, just over did the siu mai.
10 pounds…10 pounds… When I was young, my most favorite dim sum is siu mai (steamed minced pork dumpling). My mom always complained about my food choice as she loves the har gow (steamed shrimp dumpling) more.
I think fatty foods (which siu mai can be oily) can get “tired” after awhile. A while ago I was on a food trend for Korea fried chicken. After a few weeks, I did not want to eat any fried chicken (or any fried foods).
That’s almost a topic in itself.
Things you had to consume so often/much that you can’t abide them now.
